Bus loop provides *~ another link between Oakville and Burlington By HOWARD MOZEL Oakville Beaver Staff Loop is further proof that the days of municipalities existing in a vacuum are long gone. The loop is essentially a transfer point between Oakville and Burlington where passengers can connect with either tranâ€" sit system safely and efficiently. This week officials from both sides of the border gathered at the Lakeshore Road shopping plaza to celebrate the breakthrough. T uesday‘s official opening of the Lakeside Village Bus Careâ€"aâ€"Van and Burlington Transit‘s handicapped service already use the plaza as a transfer point. The next logical step, said Oakville Transit Director Eric Pilon, was to integrate the entire system. "Why not make the connection better?" said Pilon, explaining that the loop went into service Sept. 23rd. Gary Corupe, a senior policy advisor with the Ministry of Transportation, explained that the needs of the customer are central to the new program which he characterized as "signifiâ€" cant." He said the strategy, which relies on coâ€"operation, breaks down barriers to achieve a costâ€"effective result while involving the private sector at the same time. No ridership numbers between the communities are availâ€" able, said Pilon, since neither transit system currently tracks integration. Early word on the loop, though, is very encouragâ€" ing. "This is a very small, but very important interâ€"connection between our communities," said Oakville Mayor Ann Mulvale who, with Burlington Mayor Walter Mulkewich, cut a ribbon strung between two buses. All those involved in the program point to Ward 1 councilâ€" lor Ralph Robinson as the driving force behind its success. Robinson has been working on it since April after residents on Stevenson Road mounted a petition complaining about noisy buses pulling off Burlâ€"Oak Drive in order to make the return trip through Oakyville. According to Stevenson resident Tom Jachymek, neighâ€" bors were worried about their children‘s safety in addition to the lateâ€"night racket. Now that the loop is in place, they can all breathe a sigh of relief. Oakville Mayor Ann Mulvale and Burlington Mayor Walter Mulkewich cut up souvenir ribbons for children from the Parkview Children‘s Centre.
