It is unfortunate that the reason such remembrances are so important is the same reason that makes them so difficult to relate. In the end, personal experiences that could have exerted a profound effect on the young people, were transformed into interesting and timely, if ultimately forgettable vignettes. Students tried to set a sombre mood with a violin piece and various readings of period literature. Even Kanbara said he didn‘t expect most of the students to remember much of what was being said to them. "It‘s important that we understand that history is really comprised of many individual histories," Kanbara said. Bryce Kanbara, director of the National Association of Japanese Canadians, whose parents were held in internment camps during the war and its aftermath, spoke of his work, and tried to make it relevant to stuâ€" dents by focussing on racism which drove the internment program.
