A very pleased Erika Reisenberger, manager and owner with her husband Peter, feels the store‘s success is due to the loyal customer base she has built in the past twelve months. Her secret? The chinese have been working very hard at developâ€" ing a beautiful, smooth textured pearl and Mier is using only the finest of these pearls for his designs. The basic difference between a cultured seaâ€" water pearl and a freshâ€" water pearl is that a round plastic type bead is implanted (only one) in an oyster. The oyster produces a coatâ€" ing around this bead which is called nacre, and voila, you have a By Lisa Dodd Special to the Beaver Waterfront Festival has become yearâ€"round affair "â€"ow, when or why it hapâ€" . pened noâ€"one really knows, but over the past few years the Waterfront Festival organization has undergone an exciting transformation...and those other aspects of Oakville life as of us involved in the Festival are well. * keen to "stay tuned" for more! Another example of our char In the early days, the Festival was seen simply as a threeâ€"day June event that involved many Oakville residents and businessâ€" people. While that‘s still true, from my vantage point pâ€"lâ€"eâ€"nâ€"tâ€"y has changed. For example, the organization has become a yearâ€"round "boost Oakville" service club. The memâ€" bers don‘t have lunch or dinner together, or it‘s a special occasion if they do, but they meet from September to July early, early in the morning and late into the evening. cultured pearl. Freshwater pearls are however, grown in mussels, and as many as ten or more can be grown in one mussel. The difference in the actual pearl structure is that a piece of tissue is implanted in the musâ€" sel which actually disâ€" solves as the mussel secretes it‘s protective coating which is also nacre. The protective coating keeps building up so that you have an almost natural pearl vs. a nacre coated bead. Through experimentaâ€" tion, the Chinese are now producing very fine â€" quality round smooth freshwater pearls. Mier has been exhibitâ€" ing his designs around the world and has just returned from â€" Hong Kong, Hawaii and New York. the popularity of his designs has created a two to three month waiting list. I have a limited selection, but don‘t expect it to last long. When the various subâ€"commitâ€" tees of the Festival meet, they are certainly always looking down the road to the next June extravaganza. But they have now becoming increasingly involved in many Threeâ€"day event has grown Another example of our changâ€" ing structure is the meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 24th, of the Festival‘s Volunteer Subâ€" Committee. At 7:30 pm that night they‘re expecting about 50 people â€" representing approximately 1,500 volunteers â€" to gather with them at St. Mildred‘s Lightborne School to discuss the 1995 Festival. These volunteers provide all of the Festival‘s support sysâ€" tems and they share 20% of the proceeds from our $5.00 admission button proceeds. Over the past three years, just under $75,000 has been distributed to these volunteer groups. Three years ago, the Festival was not viewed as a fundâ€"raising tool for such groups. But we‘ve learned that we can all have a great time and help our community organizations earn some cold hard cash, all at the same time!
