WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 7, 1994 PAGE 32 For the second year in a row, Oakville‘s St. Marguerite school has won both the boys and girls Halton Roman Catholic School Board volleyball finals. In the 7purt'>licr board playdowns, also held last week, Pilgrim Wood made it to the boys champiâ€" onship where they lost to Acton‘s McKenzieâ€"Smith. t in e Sil D Ws Ee The glrls team from Pilgrim Wood also made it to the Halton final four but didn‘t advance out of the preliminary roundâ€"robin. Oakville school twoâ€"time winner | SEPARATE SCHOOL The St. Marguerite‘s girls team erased a 13â€"6 deficit in the first game and went on to defeat St. Luke‘s (also from Oakville) 15â€"13, 15â€"11. The St. Marguerite‘s boys team also had to surâ€" mount some early game jitters as they came back from a 10â€"5 deficit to beat Ecole St. Philippe 15â€"10, 15â€"8. Much of the success of both teams can be attributed to their extensive practice and game schedâ€" ule in which both teams played close to 150 games since September. En route to their title, the Lady Magic won gold medals in three tournaments and silver in two others. Both teams will certainly look to threeâ€"peat next year as they both have eight players returning. Here‘s the playoff summary: BOYS Championship game: St. Marguerite 2, St. Philippe 0 (15â€"10, 15â€"8). Semiâ€"finals: St. Marguerite 2, St. Joe‘s 1 (13â€"15, 15â€"10, 17â€"15). McKenzieâ€"Smith needed a tense third game victory to win the title 15â€"7, 9â€"15, 15â€"11. In the round robin, both McKenzieâ€"Smith and Pilgrim Wood had swept both games from west diviâ€" sion champion Maplehurst and central division champion C.H. Norton. St. Marguerite d‘Youville is not a very old school, having only opened in January 1993, but already it‘s made quité : name for itself in volleyball. Last year, it capped its inaugural season by winning both the girls and boys Halton Catholic School Board finals. This year, both teams (pictured above) also managed to repeat the feat, the boys defeating Ecole St. Philippe of Burlington and the girls St. Luke‘s also of Oakville. The future is also looking pretty bright for nex year with both teams expecting eight veterans to return. (Photo by Peter McCusker The newly renovated and enlarged Oakville Curling Club was home to the Financial Concept Group bonâ€" spiel last Thursday and Friday. For convener (and curler) Bill Finlay, the 32â€"team tournament for curlers 60 years of age and over was a success in every way except two: a) his own rink got beat out, and b) Oakville rinks were shut out of the championships. Seriously though, there‘s always next year. The final, an allâ€"Humber Highland (Toronto) affair, was won by Keith Johnson over Lorne Christie. Oakville‘s best finisher was Phil Atkinson who won the third event along with teammates Blaine McDonald, Jerry Morgan and Hugh Simmons. Greg McGregor won the consolation of the first event along with teammates Bob Oswald, Howard Dennis and Ron Grey. The curler in the photo is Oakville‘s Bill Curry. Club hopes to make some waves as swim season gets under way In the next couple of weeks, Oakville Aquatic Club members will be competing at every level from preâ€"novice to national. The swimmers continue to follow a demanding schedule with early morning, evening and weekend practices. W . eS â€" This season the club has a new program â€" the Senior C Team â€" open to teens who wish to participate in a more challenging swim program but prefer not to train at the very demanding level of the high performance An important part of competitive swimming is the time aimed for and achieved by the individual swimmer. Although placings and team points are an integral part of each meet, every swimmer is going for the allâ€"imporâ€" tant times that permit them to move on â€" whether that be to the next level in the club or to qualify for regional, provincial, national and international competition. Some of the club‘s youngest swimmers are gearing up for a meet on December 11 where novice swimmers seven years and up will challenge themselves to qualify for the next step. In January, the club hosts the annual Oakville Winter Invitational Swim Meet which attracts hundreds of swimmers from Halton and the surroundâ€" ing area. In the back room, computerized systems will help to organize the meet, collate and publish results and reports. Typically, youngsters enter the competitive swim program through swim camps the club holds, usually three times a year at Christmas, Easter and in the summer holidays. It is possible to sign up at other times, however. The 1â€"0 early in the second period, Matt McChesney tied things up on a picture perfect centering pass from Drew Karges with six seconds left in the period. Paul Bolta also drew an assist. Two goals within 35 seconds of one another by Bolta late in the third period put Oakville ahead and looking like they would notch their second win against Milton. Assists were earned by McChesney and Mike Folland. However, an unlucky bounce on a clearing attempt with 2:11 left on the the clock, found its way into the Rangers net and they had to settle for the tie to put their record at 6â€"7â€"2.
