Aquinas boys head back to OFSAA soccer The St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders are headed back to the provincial high school boys' soccer AAA championships, but this time they'll be without their secret weapon. A year ago, the Raiders flew under the radar at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) tournament and emerged with a silver medal. "Last year we went in as an underdog," said Raiders coach Peter Szpakowski. "This year everyone is looking for us." Even more so, given the Raiders' results this year. They defeated Hamilton Christian, the team that denied them of OFSAA gold in 2005, at this year's Hamilton Spectator Cup. Monday, Aquinas defeated last year's OFSAA bronze medalist, Bishop Tonnos, 3-1 to secure its return trip to the provincials, which begin June 5 in Kingston. First, the Raiders have a little unfinished business to take care of. Aquinas lost Friday's Halton final 3-1 to the Bishop Reding Royals. They were to square off again yesterday and, with both teams advancing, there was nothing more than OFSAA seeding on the line. Well, maybe pride. "We had the option of not playing the game," Szpakowski said, "but the guys wanted to play. I think we were maybe a little overconfident (in the Halton final) and they wanted another chance to play them." The Raiders earned that second chance by beating Bishop Tonnos. Despite carrying the play for most of the opening half, they went into the break tied 1-1. Bishop Tonnos capitalized on an early breakdown by the Raiders but Aquinas responded when Kyle Oliveira converted Julian Fabiani's cross. The Raiders, who have had trouble scoring lately, had the chance to take the lead before the half but Fabiani fired a penalty kick off the post. With time winding down in the second half, Szpakowski considered playing more of a defensive game. "I was fearful of another breakdown that could give them the winning goal but the guys wanted to push for a goal and they kept taking the play to them," he said. The Raiders would be rewarded as Fabiani found the net with 10 minutes to play, scoring the goal that would prove to be the winner. A few minutes later Fernando Noguiera would seal the victory by putting the Raiders up 3-1. -- Herb Garbutt, staff HOUSE LEAGUE LACROSSESCOREBOARD Junior Peanut BMO Harris Private Banking Bandits (goals by Dylan Samodal, Aidan Hamilton 2, Chris Dong 3, Ethan Milroy 3, Kevin Woolcock, Matthew Hledin 2, Grant Fontyn), Wings (goals by Aden Walsh 2, Jack Travassos); Rock (goals by Liam Salerno, Brennan Noden, Jack Follows 3, Alton McDermott 4, Daniel Arruda 3, Drew Kosack 2), Roughnecks (goals by Christopher Jenkins, Bryce Cordingley 2, Justin Sykes 3, Kyle Kachan 3, Timon English).
