"Infectious diseases are the number one killer next to heart disease and cancer," said Mulvale. For more information, see www.researchid.com. As part of ROAR Up Kilimanjaro, The Oakville Beaver's art director and illustrator, Steve Nease, and Mulvale are producing a children's book. "The story is essentially about an African orphan meeting the ROAR team (one young ROAR member in particular)," said Mulvale. "As the children travel up the mountain, they learn about Kilimanjaro, each other, their challenges and respective communities." Together they decide how they will have an impact on protecting the global community from the threats and effects of infectious diseases. "The intent is to educate Canadian children and inspire them to take action and make the world a better place. It sounds heavy but will be light-hearted and warm with cute characters and comedy." At public speaking engagements, "I ask the audience to stand for four questions. I'll ask them if anybody has had pneumonia, the flu, strep throat and chicken pox. After the fourth question, everybody is sitting down." Then she explains the seriousness of infectious diseases and how rapidly they spread around the world thanks to the `global community,' air travel and the shipment of goods. "A disease in Tanzania has the potential of showing up a day later in Oakville. I hope people appreciate show serious this is." One needs to only think back to the SARS crisis in Toronto three years ago, she said. Her advice? "Wash your hands. Wash your hands often. But don't use anti-bacterial soaps. Use an alcohol-based soap. Anti-bacterial soaps only help the bugs become more resistant. The bugs are getting stronger and the number of drugs that can fight bad bacteria is declining. Prevention is very important." She also advises the seriously ill to be "good patients and not be angry at the health care system, nor to look for blame. You are responsible as a patient to take really good notes and to develop a good relationship with your doctor. It's hard for doctors to make a quick and accurate diagnosis when you arrive as a stranger in emergency. "The biggest problem is our overreliance on the health care system and drugs. The best thing is don't get sick in the first place take preventative measures." For more information, contact Catherine Mulvale at 905-827-6008 or email her at camulvale@researchid.com.
