KEVIN HILL / SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER Survivors' Victory Lap symbolic walk of hope at Relay for Life Continued from page 12 prostate cancer in 1994 and is, like Taylor, a survivor. Taylor, diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1998 at age 48, is among the one per cent of men diagnosed with this disease before their 50th birthday. "You have played a part in fanning a flicker to a flame," said Relay for Life Co-Chair Barb Ambrosie at the end of the Luminary Ceremony, "one which serves as a beacon of hope for so many...loved, living and lost...long may it burn to inspire in our journey toward our ultimate goal, the eradication of cancer." Cancer survivor Mayor Ann Mulvale asked the crowd if they are ready "to give that dirty word cancer the back of our hand? "I thank God for every step I can take because I'm still here." Mulvale, who survived malignant melanoma in 1997, was the Honourary Chair of the Relay for Life for three years and a five-year participant. "The Survivors' Victory Lap is a very symbolic walk," she said. "We are the hope for the people yet to be diagnosed. "Just remember," she concluded, "cancer is a word, not a sentence." Joan Gibb, President of the Oakville Unit of the Canadian Cancer Society said, "Our message to you is hope. Our survivors are our hope." Gibb introduced Katie Mooney and Wendy Milne, of Oakville Trafalgar High School, who spearheaded the town's first high school Relay for Life and raised $60,000. Co-Chair Steve Poplar, of Appleby College said Oakville Relay for Life has grown phenomenally over the past five years and "we hope to be topping the $5 million mark this year," during the opening ceremonies. Last year the Oakville event is the second largest in Ontario and fourth largest in Canada. "Over the past four years we've raised $1.7 million for cancer research." Thanks to the event's corporate sponsors, "every penny we raise goes towards fighting cancer," said Ambrosie, who individually thanked event host Appleby College, event sponsor Scotiabank Group, Luminary sponsor SCA Personal Care North America, Survivor sponsor AGF Funds, food sponsor Longo's, media sponsor The Oakville Beaver, and GTA televi- sion sponsor CTV. Bill Hutchison, of CTV News, emceed the opening ceremonies, the Luminary Ceremony and a head shaving that raised another $2,000. The CTV team spent the night as did many others despite a light rainfall that started at about midnight and lasted approximately three hours. Many came prepared with umbrellas and ponchos. Others sought shelter in their tents, in the Survivor tent and inside Appleby's J. S. Gairdner Arena, site of a silent auction, the Canadian Cancer Society's Smart Shop, and free food distribution courtesy of Longo's. The Blushing Brides, a first-time entry of several women two of them cancer survivors who came dressed in their wedding gowns, won for best costume. Best tent was Shaynanigans' Volcano entered by Ian, Sandy and Shayna McDonald. But perhaps the most poignant entry was nine-year-old Gracen Nolan's lemonade stand in front of the Ghetto Girls tent in honour of her best friend, nine-year-old Megan Alberts, whose mother Mary Alberts died of colon cancer on May 30. Her funeral was on June 3. www.stewartfinancial.ca Duncan Stewart MBA Investment Advisor 1282B Cornwall Rd.
