Participants are invited to walk, run, wheel or cycle a 5.3kilometre route starting and finishing at the Burloak Canoe Club on Water Street. Registration on the day of the event starts at 8:30 a.m., opening ceremonies begin at 9 a.m., and the event gets under way at 9:30 a.m. with Mayor Ann Mulvale as official starter. Participants will go south on Water Street, east on Robinson Street, south on Navy Street, east on Front Street, north on George Street, east on William Street, north on Allan Street, east on Lakeshore Road, north on Balsam Drive, west on Macdonald Road, south on Douglas Avenue, and west on Randall Street back to the Burloak Canoe Club. Festivities at the Burloak Canoe Club from 9 a.m. noon will include Luau and Hula dancing, fire truck demonstrations, an outrigger boat blessing, face painting, boat and paddle rides, plus food, prizes and surprises. Proceeds from this event will be used to raise awareness and improve the lives of those living with spinal cord injuries (SCI) and related disabilities. In 1985, Rick Hanson powered his wheelchair 28,815 miles around the world, a twoyear odyssey, and raised $26 million for SCI awareness and research in his Man in Motion Tour. This led to the formation of the Rick Hansen Foundation and the launch of annual Rick Hansen Wheels in Motion fundraisers. The event, to be held at the Burlington Convention Centre from 7:30 to 10 a.m., will celebrate 16 years of the council's partnership building and feature keynote speaker Dr. Ben Levin, the deputy minister with the Ministry of Education. His talk, Community Partnerships for Student Success, will focus on the key role industry education and community partners must play in preparing a work-ready youth. Burlington Mayor Rob MacIsaac, Oakville Mayor Ann Mulvale and Regional Chairman Joyce Savoline will bring greetings from their respective municipalities. Also, participants will get to hear from a panel of students who will provide further insight into the needs of youth in Halton. Following the breakfast there'll be a free community consultation from FutureForce Halton, a new workforce development program that'll work to secure a viable labour force for the region in the coming years.
