10 - The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday June 21, 2006 Single-track French-only school has edge in West Oak Trails By Melanie Cummings SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER A French immersion school could finally find its way in West Oak Trails next fall. After months of heated public consultations Halton District Board of Education staff is recommending the new school in the growing north end be slated as a French only, Grade 1-8 school. Trustees vote on the recommendation July 5. By Cathy Brasil's reckoning, this decision is long overdue. "A fully French school in this quadrant of town will give us equality with the other three areas that all have one," said Brasil. Enrolment of French Immersion students at West Oak Trails #3 is expected to remain steady at just over 600 for the next eight years, according to the capital plan. Brasil's two children will be in Grades 7 and 8 this fall, in the French Immersion program at Eastview School. They are among 20 per cent of the region's student population enrolled in a French language program. However, this staff recommendation doesn't sit well with David Warren. He lives on Pepperbush Place. A school within walking distance of home was part of the allure when he moved into the neighbourhood 2-1/2 years ago with two young children in tow. When West Oak Trails #3, located at Pine Glen and Oakhaven Roads, opens in 2007, his school-ready firstborn child will be forced to hop on a bus out of the neighbourhood. Warren doesn't want to enroll his children in French Immersion education. He is considering a private school instead of supporting the public system. Don Vrooman has two children, in Grades 4 and 6, enrolled in the French program at Pine Grove School. The Fourth Line dual track school is currently overcapacity operating at 183 per cent with 861 students and nine portables on site. An estimated 466 French Immersion students are bused daily from West Oak Trails. An exodus of students from Pine Grove is expected should trustees uphold the French only recommendation for the new school in West Oak Trails. A fourth school in West Oak Trails, at the northeast corner of Pine Glen Avenue and Postmaster Road, is expected to be built in 2008 and provide regular programming to JK to Grade 8 students. Residents still have an opportunity to voice their opinions on this recommendation offered through the draft capital plan. For a copy of the capital plan go to www.hdsb.ca. Comments can be emailed to trustees through the board website and residents may make a presentation to the board prior to its decision July 5, by calling the board at 905 335-3663 to make a request. From birth to puberty, youngsters are constantly going through changes. Many of the major changes occur in their structural system as they grow and mature. "Growing like weeds" is not an overstatement, for it also implies a lack of control. While all the natural stresses of growth occur, which in themselves are hard to manage, children also are subject to the strains and injuries of their activities. Crawling. Running. Jumping. Falling. Playing hard. Getting into mischief. All of these impact on posture and health. Because growth patterns are so very important, parents should be sensitive to injuries their children might suffer and make certain their children have a spinal check-up by a Doctor of Chiropractic. Chiropractic examinations and treatments, which are administered to children of all ages, are safe, effective and gentle.
