Staff accompany employees Continued from page 15 Mainly they are shy and reluctant to acknowledge other colleagues said Cox. For those people STRIDE offers "job coaching." This program allows a staff member to accompany them while they are working in the community. The staff member also helps them understand their duties and assists them to become more sociable among other employees. Cox added that he receives positive feedback from employers who hire STRIDE members permanently. Not only does Cox hear positive comments from employers, but workers in the packaging plant expressed pleasure towards the STRIDE program and how its helped them. Steve Clark, 36, has been working for STRIDE for seven years and likes his colleagues and the management at the plant. "I like the people here, it's a friendly atmosphere, I like the teamwork and the management, their flexible," said Clark while smiling and holding his head up high. "It's built up my confidence, I meet new people, I learn new skills, accepting responsibility and new challenges." Cox said once people start to realize mental illnesses can occur to anyone at any point in their life, there will still be disappointments, but he remains optimistic that everyone at STRIDE will work in the community.
