In fact, the evening was mired more in procedural wrangling than by trustees clearly articulating positions, something that was especially true of those opposed to the plan. For example, Burlington trustee Bob Van de Vrande who has long been opposed, but always been vague about his reasons why presented two motions, the first of which was to approve the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) hammered out between all four partners in the project. (This is not a binding agreement, but an expression of the participants' intent to proceed with the Halton Regional Campus.) When it came time to call the question, however, Van de Vrande voted against his own COURTESY OF THE LORD OF THE RINGS 1-866-565-9351 See Regional page 3 HOBBITT-FORMING ROLE: Even though it takes Michael Therriault more than two hours to put on his Gollum makeup and costume for each performance of The Lord of the Rings, the Bronte native still enjoys the role, which recently earned him a prestigious Dora Mavor Moore Award nomination. Fresh Ontario Organic The 250-year-old white oak tree in front of Halton Regional Centre will be saved -- if residents can come up with $343,000 by Dec. 15. The old oak was rescued from the chopping block at Wednesday's regional council meeting and almost went on the auction block as $1,000 pledges started flying to save the tree. The fate of the white oak, from which Oakville takes its name and which was standing on Bronte Road 100 years before Confederation, has polarized regional council in the last month. With the road widening of Bronte Road creeping ever closer to the tree, the plan approved by the public, Region and Province would go directly through where the tree stands. The decision on whether to remove or relocate the tree was delayed apart from the road project pending an arbourist's update. However, everything about the tree seems to invoke a wide range of opinion. No one knows exactly how old the tree is, though 250 years is a best guess. It's said it could live a couple of decades or centuries -- the lifespan of a white oak can be more than 500 years. See Council page 13 579 Kerr Street, Oakville Finally!
