FRCP(C) Psychiatrist contact at drofpsychiatry@hotmail.com Oak Park OPTOMETRIST 2530 Sixth Line, Unit 8B 905-257-3542 Dr. Robert J. Pachler Dr. Eric Dawtrey, DC Clinic Director Optometrist Q: What is Mental Illness? A: The simplest way to answer thisaquestion is to explain that a mental illness is fundamentally malfunctioning of the brain. Just as disorders of the heart or of the kidneys are illnesses, the brain is functioning abnormally when one has mental illness. As you can imagine the brain is an organ within our bodies that is extremely difficult to study. We have very recently developed technology that enables us to see how the brain functions under different situations. For example if someone is suffering from Depression we can now see differences in how that person's brain is functioning when compared with a brain of an individual who is not depressed. All mental illnesses have an underlying problem within the brain. The vast majority of these illnesses can be successfully treated. We have learned that the likelihood of one developing a mental illness depends on the person's genes. In other words people are born with the possibility that their brains may malfunction and it is not their fault if they become ill. Most of the time when one becomes ill there is a stress of some sort in their lives which profoundly affects them. These stresses may include the loss of a loved one, the loss of a job, another physical illness, financial strain and many other stresses. The stress may trigger a change in the brain and this change could then lead to the mental illness. People can take courses or receive therapy to help them minimize the impact of the stress and this ultimately could decrease the impact on the brain and be a part of the recovery process. We should be very optimistic about recovery from a mental illness because no matter what one's stresses are in life or what brain changes occur we have developed excellent methods of treating these illnesses and are continuing to do so. 465 Morden Road, Oakville (905) 845-2293 Q: I thought a chiropractor would cure me with spinal adjustments. Why does my chiropractor say he does not `cure' people? Q: A: Q: A: Why should I wear sunglasses? to correct A: A chiropractor adjusts the spine system to problem areas. When your spine is correctly aligned it allows your nervous function properly and your body is better Even though people often think of sunglasses as a fashion accessory there are two main reasons for wearing sunglasses. 1) To protect your eyes from the harmful rays of the sun and 2) to reduce the amount of light and glare that reaches the eye thus providing more comfortable vision. equipped to `cure' itself naturally!! There are many things you can also do to help this process .... Most healing happens when you are asleep. Getting a good night's rest is important. Your body needs energy to heal itself the kind of energy that comes from proper nutrition. You may also require nutritional supplements which your chiropractor and/or naturopath may be able to recommend. Try to avoid foods that are preserved, packaged or unnatural. Reduce your consumption of foods with added chemicals, or high in fat or sugar content. Avoid excessive amounts of caffeine and alcoholic beverages. Exercise regularly. Healing requires strong muscles and a heart and lungs that can send nutrients and oxygen to the cells in your body. Your chiropractor and massage therapist can recommend stretches and exercises to complement your treatment. Good health, however, means that you need to make a real commitment to movement and exercise. Listen to your body!! Illness is the normal response for a healthy body when dealing with an unhealthy situation. It should be seen as a signal that something in your life needs to change. Laugh!! Lighten your load!! Research has shown that `key' to living long is to live happy. Attitude is important. Give yourself time to think and reflect, time to heal, time to enjoy and make every day count! Be patient. Maintain a schedule of regular chiropractic appointments. Each adjustment builds on the last. Good health is a priceless gift!! Give yourself or someone special the gift of health today. Give the office a call to book a complementary consultation to see if chiropractic can help your body to help you on the path to a healthy and happy lifestyle! Can ultraviolet radiation really harm my eyes? While the body has a natural defense mechanism to protect against infrared radiation under normal outdoor conditions, there is a growing body of scientific evidence that ultraviolet radiation is harmful to the eye. Certain risk factors are known to contribute to your risk such as 1) cataract surgery 2) certain prescription drugs such as oral contraceptives and tetracyclines and 3) those who spend most of their day outdoors, work near snow, sand or water, live in high altitudes or near the equator, or use sunlamps or tanning salons. For more information visit our website at A: You should! While appearance is an important reason to replace a missing tooth, there are many others. Over time the teeth next to the missing tooth will start to shift and tip and have to do extra work the missing tooth use to do. The opposing tooth that would normally bite against the missing tooth will start to erupt or "grow" longer than the adjacent teeth. These kinds of shifting of teeth will over time cause different problems. Mal-positioned teeth can cause incorrect contact of the teeth. Your jaw muscles may have to learn to unconsciously avoid this contact, causing stress and pain in those muscles. The shifted teeth can be harder to clean and result in increased decay or gum problems. Depending on your situation you can use a removable denture, a non-removable "bridge" in which the adjacent teeth are crowned and hold a replacement tooth between them, or for the most natural and easiest to maintain solution - an artificial tooth root (implant) with a crown attached to that. What ever you choose, an investment in your oral health is always a good one.
