For residents of Burlington, that are clinically appropriate, this means they can access treatment closer to home instead of driving to Oakville or Hamilton, as many as three times each week. "We are very pleased to partner with Halton Healthcare Services to bring dialysis to Burlington. Our donors, hospital supporters and corporate sponsors have been 100 per cent behind this effort! The new dialysis unit will make a huge difference to the quality of life for Burlington and area patients and families," said Scott. The estimated total capital cost of the new dialysis unit, including equipment, of $7.8 million -will be shared by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, Halton Healthcare Services and Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital. The satellite dialysis unit is expected to be completed by summer of 2007. For more information about the Renal Dialysis Program at HHS please log on to www.haltonhealthcare.com. Halton Healthcare Services (HHS) and Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital (JBMH) Receive approval for a Satellite Renal Dialysis Unit in Burlington Officials at Halton Healthcare Services (HHS) and Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital (JBMH) received confirmation that the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care has approved Halton Healthcare Services' submission for a Satellite Dialysis Unit in Burlington. This means that residents of Burlington requiring Renal Dialysis will be able to access this vital life-giving service in their own community. Operated as a satellite of the Regional Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) Program of Halton Healthcare Services, the new unit will be located at 2160 Itabashi Way, on the lower level of Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital's (JBMH) Wellness House facility. The design accommodates a 24-station dialysis unit, adding to the existing 24 stations at Halton Healthcare Services' Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital which is currently above capacity. The new Satellite Dialysis Unit will be operated under the medical supervision of HHS Nephrologists, Dr. Danny Sapir and Dr. Sanjay Pandeya. "The care and treatment for patients with kidney disease needs to expand to keep pace with the demand," explains Dr. Sapir. "Currently Burlington residents who require dialysis travel to Oakville or to Hamilton for their treatment and mobility can be quite an issue for a number of our dialysis patients." "We thank the Minister for his decision to support the provision of this life-saving service to Burlington," said John Oliver, HHS President and CEO. "The expansion of the HHS Dialysis Program into Burlington, in partnership with Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital, will allow us to continue to meet the healthcare needs of our growing communities as close to home as possible. This initiative is a win-win situation for both hospitals one which will ultimately benefit the residents in Oakville and Burlington who require dialysis services." JBMH President and CEO Don Scott is pleased to put the 15,000 square feet of unoccupied space at Wellness House to good use, knowing up to 144 dialysis patients will ultimate- How to scale back on obesity Raise your hand if you have trouble resisting donuts and cookies at meetings. Raise your hand if you've driven to get milk and eggs because the store is 'too far away' from your home. Raise your hand if you've bought snacks such as chips because they cost less than a healthier alternative, such as mixed nuts or trail mix. If you answered 'yes' to any of the statements above, you're not alone. But it may also mean you are at risk for obesity. Almost 60 per cent of Canadians are either overweight or obese -- and it's created a major health crisis for the country. According to Dr. Diane Finegood, Scientific Director of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Institute of Nutrition, Diabetes and Metabolism, the problem of obesity is not rocket science, it's more complex. Under the leadership of Dr. Finegood, her institute has made research into obesity its number-one priority and, in the past year, CIHR has invested $12.2 million in research on obesity across Canada. "Obesity is complicated," she says, "and it's frustrating to see that Canadians are continuing to blame themselves for not being able to solve the problem. But, the fact is, no single diet program or exercise plan is going to solve this." Dr. Finegood explains that Canadians make numerous choices daily that can increase a person's chances to gain weight. Here are some personal examples. Describe your work environment: Is it possible to include physical activities in your schedule? Can you walk to public transit? Describe your food environment: Do you work in an area where there are lots of fast food restaurants or are there places that offer healthy, low-fat food at reasonable prices? Describe your community: Do you have easy access to recreation facilities? Do the streets have sidewalks and good lighting making it safe and comfortable to walk? In communities across Canada the so-called "built" environment has a huge impact on people's lifestyle and can make it easy or hard to make healthy choices such as including walking in your daily routine. "We need to work harder to make sure that, of the many choices people make each day, making the healthy choices will be easy," says Dr. Finegood. "If we can address this, then we will have a chance in the fight against obesity."
