www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday July 15, 2006 - 7 Halton Region asks residents limit lawn watering in dry weather As the weather forecast for the next several days is very hot and dry, Halton residents are being asked to cut back on outdoor water use in order to alleviate pressure on the region's reservoirs. Unseasonably dry weather for the next several days, combined with heavy water use, has prompted Halton Region to ask residents to minimize outdoor water use, including lawn watering, car washing and driveway washing. Flower and vegetable gardens should be watered by hand and only as needed. "Earlier this week, the region received a significant amount of rain. However, the upcoming hot and dry weather will cause a spike in outdoor water use. We want to ensure that the region's reservoirs have enough water to provide for essential household uses and fire protection, so we're asking residents to help by reducing their outdoor water use," said Halton Regional Chair Joyce Savoline. Halton Region's Planning and Public Works staff is monitoring the region's reservoir levels closely. If the hot, dry weather persists, Halton Region will issue a complete watering ban. Halton Region has an odd-even day watering by-law in effect, which advises that even-numbered houses should water only on even calendar days and odd-numbered housed should water only on odd calendar days. However, since lawns only need one inch of water once a week to stay healthy, it is not necessary to water on every odd or even day.
