www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday July 21, 2006 - 5 Urban Design Awards get facelift It will be late in coming, but worth it. Oakville's Urban Design Awards reception will be held next spring so that a facelift of the program can be done in the fall to give the program a whole new look. The facelift is required so the program can keep pace with the latest in emerging design trends. The update aims to meet the changing needs of the design industry and make way for new categories to fully recognize the wide range of urban design projects currently taking shape in Oakville. "Although the awards ceremony will be delayed until the spring of 2007, it will be well worth the wait. It's an excellent opportunity for industry leaders to showcase their projects to the community," said Charles McConnell, Manager of Current Planning and Urban Design. "Staff will be evaluating the current program from top to bottom. We will be looking closely at what award-winning urban design means to Oakville," said McConnell. "Our goal is to recognize forward-thinking urban design projects that take into account both the natural and human environments. We'll be looking for projects that improve both the community and its landscape," said McConnell. Oakville's Urban Design Awards program was developed to promote excellence in urban design, architecture and landscape architecture. It helps recognize how the built environment contributes to the overall quality of life in Oakville. "Oakville is a community that takes a great deal of pride in its appearance," explained McConnell. Feedback from members of the design industry and public is welcome. Send comments by e-mail to planning @oakville.ca, or by mail to Urban Design Awards, c/o Planning Services Department, PO Box 310, 1225 Trafalgar Rd., Oakville, ON L6J 5A6. In 2004, the Town of Oakville received 42 urban design submissions. Submissions are evaluated by the quality of the landscape, architecture and site planning, and how well the project contributed to the existing aesthetic and design qualities of the community.
