Oakville scored a touchdown on the game's final play to edge the Quinte-Limestone Panthers 29-27. RON KUZYK / OAKVILLE BEAVER Hurricanes receive sponsorship The Oakville Hurricanes '95 under11 girls' soccer team will be the beneficiary of an $8,000 sponsorship by the Dundee Little Chips soccer development program. Endorsed by Canadian soccer authority Helen Stoumbos, the new Dundee Little Chips Backyard Drills puts a fun spin on soccer development to promote participation and fitness for the whole family, helping to develop soccer skills, confidence and teamwork. Local Dundee advisors, including Paul Foley, a mutual fund representative at Dundee Private Investors Inc. in Oakville, and Burlington-based certified financial planner Joe D'Aurizio, have been instrumental in the sponsorship of the Hurricanes, a rep team in the Oakville Soccer Club. "Our soccer involvement goes beyond a typical corporate sponsorship. We're providing dollars, education, fun for kids and a great way for parents to share in the fun of the game," Foley said. Last-second heroics lift Longhorns into playoffs The Oakville Longhorns waited until the last second -- literally -- to clinch their spot in the Northern Football Conference playoffs. Tom Wighton caught an eight-yard touchdown pass from Mark Demerling on the game's final play, lifting the Longhorns to a dramatic 29-27 win over the Quinte-Limestone Panthers Saturday at Bronte Athletic Field. The victory squared Oakville's record at 4-4, good for seventh overall in the NFC standings and the league's second-last playoff spot. Quinte-Limestone entered the game with a 2-5 mark, one game behind the Longhorns. Had the Panthers held off Oakville in the dying seconds, they would have made the playoffs by having an identical record and owning the head-tohead tiebreaker. "It would have been the first time in the league's 27-year history (that Oakville missed the postseason) and we didn't want to be the ones," said Longhorns head coach Karl Kustor, who played in the NFC for 23 of those seasons. "Mark Demerling (Oakville's long-time quarterback) made a big speech about that." Wighton -- a defensive back substituted into the game for the final play after Mike Dingsdale was forced to leave with an injury -- caught the pass deep in the end zone on a designed play. The reception capped off an improbable rally by the Longhorns, who trailed 27-19 with two minutes left but kicked a field goal and then forced a two-and-out by the Panthers to get the ball back. Rick Rodrigues and Dingsdale scored touchdowns earlier in the game for Oakville, with ex-CFLer Dana Segin booting three field goals. Defensively, Stafford Wilson led the way for the Longhorns, knocking down several balls and making a number of tackles. Oakville's first playoff contest won't be easy -- a clash this Saturday in Waterloo against the defending champion Tri City Outlaws. The teams split their two regular-season matchups. "The key to beating them is to stop (Jeff) Nosal, their quarterback," Kustor said. "We feel good about the matchup."
