38 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday October 13, 2006 www.oakvillebeaver.com Hawks win Lady Bruins Classic The Loyola Hawks senior girls' basketball team's success has not been limited to Halton high school league play, in which it handily won its first three games. Loyola also earned the championship at the recent eight-team Sheridan College Lady Bruins Basketball Classic, winning all three of its games. The Hawks opened the tournament with a 5614 romp over Robert F. Hall, led by a 17-point effort from Alex Pecar. Alex Thomas added 10 points and Jen O'Brien contributed eight as Loyola advanced into the tournament's championship bracket. Loyola faced a much bigger test in the semifinal, trailing Turner Fenton 19-16 at halftime before rallying for a 46-31 triumph. Tenacious man-to-man defense -- keyed by Megan Hickingbottom, Trisha McLeod, Kristen Keith and Pecar -- helped the Hawks shut down Fenton's top scorer, who had tallied 44 points the previous night. Pecar was Loyola's top scorer with 18 points, with Ashara Cadogan adding 10 and O'Brien netting nine. In the final, Pecar continued her strong twoway play, scoring eight points and playing excellent defense in the Hawks' 37-21 win over St. Francis Xavier. Cadogan had 12 points for Loyola, which received contributions from its entire bench. Rounding out the championship team were Lorenna Novielli, Shannon Hayword, Danielle Megannetty, Shannon Griffen, Cassandra DeSouza, Stephanie DeSouza and Ally O'Neill. Gary Laurin coaches the squad.
