22 - The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday October 25, 2006 Angus SCOTT Regional and Local Councillor, Oakville - Ward 5 E T EC L WARD 1 TOWN AND REGIONAL COUNCILLOR Margaret Mercer Age: 49 Occupation: Organizational and Communication Consultant Political experience: This is my first run at public office. However, I was elected president of my undergraduate class at York University about 20 years ago. Development Taxes Environment Development: Current Councillor accepted thousands of campaign p dollars from developers and then voted for twelve-story towers in our quiet ward - despite 98% of residents voting against them. Six fifteenstory towers are planned. What will he do? If elected: I will change our course and ensure a proper mix of housing for our ward with careful consideration to our families and accessible recreational spaces for all. Taxes: · Halton taxes to rise 7% per year for next 5 years. · Oakville's spending has exploded from $82 million to $145 million in just six years. · Current Councillor is the budget chief and says this is a "responsible" budget. It is not a responsible budget: It is a recipe for higher taxes and reduced services. If elected: I will demand a line-item analysis of entire budget in a public forum so as to avoid illegal secret budget meetings like those held this year. Environment: · Our Councillor has voted on issues and attended meetings as required, but has not provided us with a single innovative approach to protecting our environment. If elected: I will bring my vision to Council. It is a vision developed from my senior University of Toronto study that recognizes that ecosystems require more than small parks; they require connection to the larger ecosystem as well as the respect of builders and residents alike.
