36 - The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday October 25, 2006 www.oakvillebeaver.com Oakville Peace Concert celebrates 20th anniversary at Nov. 5 event Oakville will celebrate 20 years of music and peace on Nov. 5. The 20th annual Oakville Peace Concert will resurrect some of the spirit of the 1960s and 70s and unite the spirit of peace with the power of music. With Canadian troops in Afghanistan, numerous wars in Africa and the war in Iraq, the concert is as necessary as ever. While the event is based around music, it also offers other attractions including speakers, poetry and food. This year's concert features a speech by local MP Bonnie Brown, a long-time advocate of peace who is recognized as the first legislator in North America to speak out against the war in Iraq. Also speaking is William Payne, a reservist with the Christian Peacemakers Teams (CPT), a group that sends unarmed teams into crisis situations in hopes of encouraging warring parties to adopt nonviolent alternatives to war. The theme of this year's Oakville Peace Concert is: Shine a Light: Twenty Years of a Day for peace in Oakville. "Every year, we have a different theme which links peace with other concerns," said Stephen Dankowich, founder of the Oakville Community Centre for Peace, Ecology and Human Rights and organizer of the this year's concert. Past themes have included Global Unity Starts in Our Community in 1992 and Keep Space for Peace in 2001. This year's featured musicians include the reggae-socaska-funk-rock-blues duet SINVA, who write and perform socially conscious music aimed at educating listeners about issues involving human rights, environmentalism and peace. Other performers include local musician and songwriter Thomas Patrick. The last hour of the concert will include a discussion of the Canadian military's new robust recruitment campaign, Operation Connection, and the peace movement's response to it, Operation Objection, spearheaded by the activist group Act for the Earth. The Oakville Peace Concert is Nov. 5, 2-4 p.m. at the Church of the Incarnation, 1240 Old Abbey Lane. Tickets are $10 each and $1 for kids 12 and under.
