38 - The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday October 25, 2006 www.oakvillebeaver.com Intrada Brass to launch latest recording at Sunday's performance The Intrada Brass of Oakville's Oct. 29 Celebration! concert at the Oakville Centre will also feature the group's launch of its sixth record, Portrait. The new compilation tracks the band's beginnings as a rehearsal band, which eventually made a recording and then became an international best-seller among devotees of brass ensemble music. That was just over eleven years ago. In 1996, the group became formally organized and began presenting concerts, going on to release five more CDs, culminating with Portrait. These CDs have been widely broadcast in Canada by CBC Radio and Classical 96, the BBC in Britain, NPR in the U.S. and in Australia and Europe. Of the new recording's 20 tracks, 16 have been taken from previous CDs, and four new tracks have been added. Of these, two are studio recordings which were never released, and two are concert recordings of audience favourites, including Paul Stevenson's jazz flügelhorn version of Errol Garner's Misty. "What better way to celebrate ten years of music-making than to take the highlights from our previous CDs, three of which are sold out, and make them available to our new fans in Oakville and beyond," said music director, Bram Gregson. Although Intrada Brass has never had more than 32 players at any one time, almost 100 different players were involved in the recordings collected on Portrait, because of the turnover in personnel over the years. At the end of last season, Intrada Brass lost its principal bass trombonist to the Canadian military. Leonard Winsor was recruited by the Band of the Royal Canadian Artillery in Edmonton. "We're very happy that Len's great talent has been recognized, but it left us with a huge gap in our trombone section," said Gregson. Barrington Venables, son of principal cornetist Robert Venables, has been engaged to play bass trombone this season. "He's a young musician with great promise and we're betting he'll grow into the role," said Gregson. Portrait will be on sale in the lobby at the Oct. 29 concert at the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts. It will be available later through www.intradabrass.ca and at several local retail outlets. Concert ticket information is available at www.oakvillecentre.ca.
