www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday October 25, 2006 - 41 OT blanked in Halton field hockey final Tyke AA Rangers By Kevin Nagel SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER Although the ultimate goal of both teams is to win an OFSAA championship, Notre Dame Fightin' Irish and Oakville Trafalgar Red Devils entered Monday's Halton high school senior girls' field hockey final determined to take the coveted regional championship trophy. Despite Notre Dame's 2-0 victory at the Oakville Trafalgar field -- the Irish's fifth straight Halton title win over the Red Devils in the seven straight years the two teams have met in the final -- the Oakville squad still has a chance to beat out the Irish for the lone OFSAA berth up for grabs among Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference teams. If the favoured Red Devils defeated the Hamilton Catholic school winner Bishop Ryan in yesterday's GHAC Challenge game, the Red Devils would qualify for another shot at Notre Dame tomorrow in the GHAC final back in Oakville. Katie Roganowicz, a Grade 10 left winger who played with the junior Irish last year, scored two late goals Monday to give Notre Dame the win. "Their goalie plays very high and she's very good," said Mika Vanderkooy, who along with Gina Bucci coaches the Irish. "We know from reading the Post and the Beaver that she hadn't let a goal in all year." On the first goal, Roganowicz deflected a long shot past OT keeper Nyrie Israelian to break the scoreless tie. On the second, with about a minute left in the game, she slammed in a rebound after a teammate's deflection was blocked. "She's a pure sniper, our leading goal scorer, savvy and cool for a Grade 10 player," said Vanderkooy of the under-16 provincial team player, one of four on the Irish roster. The Red Devils had one of their best chances to score immediately following the Irish's first goal, but Notre Dame goalkeeper Katy Jo Williams came up with a big save. "It went back and forth," said Oakville Trafalgar co-coach Jim Groen. "They capitalized on their chances and we missed a couple of ours." Roganowicz wasn't even sure she scored the second goal that occurred in a scrum in front of the Red Devils' net. "(Teammate) Kristen Altenhoff stood in front of their goalie and deflected the ball and I shot it but I'm really not sure if I put it in," said the diminutive attacker, who is more concerned with Thursday's game than any individual accomplishments. "Our goal is to play a team game and win OFSAA." Groen doesn't intend to change Oakville Trafalgar's game plan -- or if he is, he's not saying -- if the two rivals clash in a rematch tomorrow. "We'll just go at `em the same way we did (Monday)," he said. If the Red Devils lost yesterday's challenge game, Notre Dame would head west and play the GHAC final in Hamilton. win first five games Stellar defensive play and solid goaltending has paid early dividends for the Oakville tyke AA Rangers. The Rangers won their first five games of the hockey season, scoring 27 times in the process while allowing a paltry four goals. In the season opener, Oakville fell behind Burlington 1-0 before rallying for a 4-2 win. Jacob Proszek, Kyle Kennery, Spenser McLean and Kyle Petta-Ionescu netted singles for the Rangers. Callum Challis and William Jelinek shared the shutout in Oakville's next game, a 5-0 blanking of Guelph. Jaden Luik, Scotty McLaren, Joshua Gill, Kennery and Petta-Ionescu tallied for the victors. The Rangers followed that win with another shutout effort, downing Georgetown 6-0. Challis and Jelinek again split time in goal, with Cameron McLean sparking the offense with a pair of markers. Michael Taciuk, Adam Nowoselski, McLaren and Gill also scored. Oakville's balanced attack continued in a 7-1 win over Guelph. Kennery scored twice while Brett Goold, Spenser McLean, Cameron McLean, Petta-Ionescu and McLaren added singles. The Rangers then downed Flamborough 5-1, with goals from Tyler Sampson, McLaren, Kennery, Gill and Goold.
