The Blades squandered a 7-3 lead as Burlington rallied for a 9-8 victory in Provincial Junior A Hockey League action at Dominion Twin Rinks. The loss dropped Oakville, despite owning a 9-4-1-1 record, to fifth place in the West Conference, two points removed from a three-way logjam for second place that now includes Burlington thanks to the Blades' charitable ways. "You get seven goals and you get into that offensive mindset and you forget about defence," said Chase Langeraap, whose natural hat trick helped Oakville build a 6-2 advantage. "That's what killed us. We made too many mental mistakes." Despite some lapses in the second period, Oakville still seemed as though it would not let the game slip away. After the Cougars scored twice in 40 seconds to cut the lead to 7-5, the Blades' Domenic Monardo roofed a shot less than a minute later to restore his team's three-goal margin. Burlington's Sean Wilson's late goal -- the fifth marker in a span of 4:46 -- would send the Blades to the dressing room still enjoying an 8-6 advantage. That's when it all started to unravel. Veteran goalie David Scamurra, making his second start since returning from the Ontario Hockey League, took an unsportsmanlike penalty at the end of the period. The Blades' Cody Hamilton then got called for hooking 26 seconds into the third and Burlington capitalized to pull within one. Oakville native Kerry Barchan drew the Cougars even with his second of the night and, six minutes into the third, Wilson was allowed to walk out in front and lift a backhander over Matt Hoyle, who replaced Scamurra after the tying goal, for his fourth of the night. The Blades would have their chances to tie. With Wilson off for spearing, Oakville managed only one shot on a three-minute power play but it was a dangerous one. Cougars goalie Oliver Wren showed a quick glove hand to get a piece of the shot and then reached back to cover the puck as it trickled toward the goal line. In the final seconds, Oakville's Chris Haltigin ripped a shot off the inside of the post as the Blades, with the goalie on the bench for an extra attacker, enjoyed a two-man advantage. Wren then kicked out his pad to stop the rebound just before the final buzzer. Brendan DeFazio, Daniel Calitri and Langeraap staked the Blades to a 3-2 lead in the first. After Langeraap scored goals 20 seconds apart, Trevor Eckenswiller made it 6-2. Trevor Elliott would give the Blades a seemingly comfortable 7-3 advantage with six minutes left in the second. Saturday, Calitri scored with five minutes left in regulation to break a 5-5 tie and give the Blades a 6-5 win over Streetsville. Paul Conter, Daniel Borges, Cody Hamilton, Langeraap and Monardo also scored. Caltri, who leads the team with 12 goals, Lindsay Sparks and Julian Cimadamore each scored twice in Friday's 8-1 win over Milton. Langeraap and Jordan Ogilvie had the other goals while Elliott had three assists. The Blades were in action again last night, when they visited the Bramalea Blues, and will host the Buffalo Jr. Sabres Friday at Dominion Twin Rinks (a 7:30 p.m. start). -- Herb Garbutt can be reached at sports@oakvillebeaver.com.
