Obituaries PARKIN, William Henry, a.k.a. Harry- born February 24, 1924, in Oakville, Ontario, passed away on October 9, 2006, in Galt, California, after a brave battle with cancer. Harry was the son of Clarence Edgar Parkin and Mary Elizabeth DeLargie of Oakville, Ontario. Harry was the 11th of 16 children. During World War II, Harry volunteered to join the Canadian Army in 1940, but in order to do so, he lied about his age. Soon after, the Army found out and released him. Not giving up, Harry then enlisted in the Canadian Navy. He served on the HMCS Haida from 1943 to 1945. Harry was a gunner aboard the Haida, and was involved in many enemy battles along the English Channel. Once wounded in a training exercise, like most true heroes, he never gave up. After the war, Harry held many odd jobs. One night, while dancing at the Palace Royale, he met the love of his life. On August 21, 1954, he married Mary Joyce Snow of Toronto. In 1960, Harry and Joyce moved to San Diego, California, where they provided a loving home for their three children, Harry, Mary Ann, and Bill. Harry and Joyce owned a restaurant and then the Hollywood Cocktail Lounge for 18 years in San Diego. Harry worked hard to provide a good life for his family. Joyce was able to stay home with the children. After 44 years of marriage, his darling wife Joyce passed away in December 1998. In April 2002, after 42 years of living in San Diego, Harry moved to Northern California to live with his son Bill, daughter-in-law Carrie, and granddaughter Lauryn Joyce. Two more grandchildren came along, Ben in 2003 and Brandon in 2006. Harry's final years were spent enjoying his grandchildren, and visiting his family, friends and fellow veterans in Canada during the summer months. Harry passed away peacefully surrounded by his children. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Harry is survived by his son Harry and grandson John of San Diego, daughter Mary Ann and granddaughters Jessica and Angelica of Chula Vista, son Bill, granddaughter Lauryn and grandsons Ben and Brandon of Galt. Harry will be going home to Canada for the last time, and will be intured with his wife Joyce. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held in Oakville, Ontario, at Oakview Funeral Home, 56 Lakeshore Rd. W. on Saturday, October 28, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. All family and friends are invited to attend the celebration, with a reception immediately following.
