Dr. Fish is Medical Director of the Ross Tilley Burn Unit of Toronto's Sunnybrook Health Science Centre, and is one of Canada's leading burncare specialists who has also contributed to medical aid in Africa. All proceeds from the event will be donated to the Canadian Shriners Hospital for Children, a charity that provides free orthopaedic and burn care to patients 18 years and younger. AIDS activist Brenda Zimmerman was the big winner at the 10th annual ATHENA Awards Gala and Dinner held Wednesday at the Oakville Conference and Banquet Centre. Zimmerman, an associate professor at the Schulich School of Business at York University and a recently published author was astonished by her win. "Very surprised and humbled," said Zimmerman describing how she felt about winning the ATHENA award. "The work I do, the challenge that I am looking at is so huge and I am just a small player, that sometimes I feel like I've just thrown pebbles into an ocean," she said. "Yet tonight makes me feel like those pebbles may have started to be the ripples of such up waves. It's a wonderful feeling." Zimmerman recently published a book titled Getting To Maybe: How To Change The World. She is an AIDS activist whose focus is on the hardship of women and children in Africa and she is a recognized leader who has spent years as a mentor to women. Her book explains how everyone can contribute to the world in their own way. That you don't have to be the CEO of a corporation to make a difference in the world," said Zimmerman. The ATHENA Award is given to an individual who has above everything else helped women obtain their maximum potential, given back to the community and has accomplished success in their professional lives. Zimmerman noted that the ATHENA Award gives recognition to women. "It is an acknowledgement that we need to sort of accept our own power and our own capacity to change the world," said Zimmerman, explaining what the ATHENA Award means to her. "To me the ATHENA is an acknowledgment of that. We all need to find our way. "How do we, in our small way, make a big impact," she added. The evening, which included dinner as well as a raffle and door prizes, also featured the musical talent of singer/songwriter Susan Aglukark, who was the evening's keynote speaker.
