That's where any semblance of agreement among the candidates ends. Carr maintains that his track record shows that he's been a strong voice for Oakville and he has connections that will give Oakville a strong voice at Queen's Park where it needs one. Marshall said he's worked for the Region for years and is proud of its Triple A credit rating and its 2.5-per cent anticipated budget increase. He said it doesn't include the police budget as the police can head to the province to push through their budget increase so it's out of the Region's control. Burton said there's only one taxpayer and they'll pay the Region and police budget hike and it'll be in the order of seven per cent. "To say the police budget is not part of the regional budget is just silly, it's voodoo economics," said Burton. The Oakville resident said there are accusations flying about "half truths." "These are well-documented facts. They're not half truths and they're certainly not garbage," he said, offering report numbers and page numbers to back the claims he made. Burton said he's an engineer by trade who deals with facts and charged "bureaucrats deal in hyperbole and obscure jargon." When Burton charged citizens advisory groups haven't worked, Marshall countered they work quite well and Carr noted he always used citizens groups for input. When asked if candidates would maintain the Region's budget, Carr said he'd look closely at all financial aspects, but that the Region needs an appropriate budget. Plaschka, too, said he'd maintain the budget. Marshall said, "There's no need for a decrease, but there's no reason for an increase, it's at the right level." "We need lower taxes," said Burton. On the plan to bring Halton Region, Halton Regional Police Services and the Catholic and public school boards into the one regional campus facility at the Regional/police headquarters on Bronte Road, there is also a divergence of opinion. The Catholic school board has backed out of the plan, but there's talk it's an election issue and that board's stance may change after the election. "I'm proud to say the campus plan is my plan," said Marshall, noting it's what taxpayers always ask for, elimination of duplication of services. Burton claimed it's "empire building" and that the Province is responsible for school boards, not the Region. Carr said he'd take "a strong look at it." "A facility of this size, if we do it wrong and it goes over budget, it could be a tremendous burden," said Carr. Plaschka said it needs to be reviewed and if done, suggested savings be realized from it being a test case for use of energy saving technology. In a final bid for votes, Burton said he'd build no grandiose office for the regional chair, there wouldn't be hundreds of garbage trucks going up Bronte Road or an incineration plant. Marshall said, "The community is in great shape with a quality of life second to none." Plaschka again noted energy concerns like global warming and Carr promised to be a strong voice and noted his history at just that.
