"We wanted to create an option for consumers that allows them to eat healthfully, truly healthfully," said Aurora. "When you go into the store and you see a Mom's Healthy Secrets product, you know it's healthy not pseudo-healthy." Among the differences between Mom's Healthy Secrets and most cereals out there is the fact that it's recommended to be stored in the fridge, and its shelf life is just nine months. "This concept that cereal can stay on your shelf for two years and nothing happens to it that's not right," said Julie, who added there was pressure from the marketplace to add preservatives to Mom's Healthy Secrets' cereal to allow for longer shelf time. "We didn't give in. This was formulated in a kitchen, not in a lab. It was literally made for our family so that we could eat healthy," she added. "We really believe food should be fresh, and the notion that food should be fuel for the body. You would never just shove garbage in your gas tank, and your body is the same way." On the back of each bag of cereal are tips, including adding hot water, hot or cold milk or yogurt to sweeten the taste. A portion of the proceeds from Mom's Healthy Secrets goes to the Canadian Diabetes Association. In Oakville, Mom's Healthy Secrets cereal is available at all Dominions, Organic Garage, 579 Kerr St., Candy Cupboard, 255 Lakeshore Rd. E. and The Barn Fruit Market, 280 North Service Rd. W.
