Pencils and books are her weapons and her army consists of 100 teachers who put up with threats on their lives, poor pay and substandard working environments. The mission of Jabarkhil and her teacher troops is to create a better Afghanistan one educated student at a time. On the heels of spending the past eight months in her former homeland, the advocate came to Oakville Monday to update 20 women, who are part of the group Canadians in Support of Afghan Women, on the progress accomplished with their support. There are now 5,000 young women heading daily to one of the four schools set up by Jabarkhil across her country. Students grill mayoral candidates By Angela Blackburn OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF See Only page 5 Count on students to show up in force -- at least when it's on school time -- but the youngest voters show up the least on Voting Day. Oakville's five mayoral candidates were out Wednesday to reach more than 500 students at Iroquois Ridge High School. Each candidate had their own way of trying to connect with the Grades 10, 11 and 12 students -- as well as the Grade 5 pupils from Brantwood Public School, who witnessed their first political debate. Each candidate encouraged students not only to vote, but to get involved at Town Hall. The Ridge students, under the tutelage of Civics teacher Nick Brune, however, are already involved.
