In the Sanger family, work is the tie that binds and vice-versa. The third generation of family, and customers, has now found their way into the contact lens company started by its patriarch Frederick Sanger and his wife Emily, back in 1959. Both have since passed away. "We simply all enjoy working together, we're very close," said Susan Sanger-Martin, who is the founder's daughter and now secretary-treasurer and part-owner of the Bronte Village shop. Her brother David Sanger is her business partner and the resident optician and lens fitter. His wife Jackie is the centre's lab technician. Susan's son Rob is also a resident optician and her niece Christine works in the lab. Her brother Stephen runs two other shops in Don Mills and in Oshawa, and when brother John retired from his practice in Toronto, Susan and David took ownership. Brother Rodney, who operated another centre in Hamilton has since retired too and his son Steven has stepped into the fold. The contact lens business is obviously a fine fit for the family. After 47 years, the local Oakville business is still going strong. Sanger Contact Lens Centre has just opened a larger shop and lab two blocks down the street on Lakeshore Road West, in Bronte Village. The family donned their work clothes and did all the renovation themselves. Frederick's offspring continue in the tradition he began, as a warm, friendly business owner and expert in the field. He was a contact lens consultant at Toronto Western Hospital and conducted research into corneal implants at the Banting Institute. Frederick was also instrumental in ensuring opticians were certified in contact lens fitting across the province, was founder and president of the Ontario Contact Lens Association and lectured throughout North America for 15 years. His sons continue to follow in their dad's footsteps, writing for ophthalmic journals, lecturing, setting examinations and courses, and remaining instrumental in providing continuous education in the contact lens field nationwide. Sanger Contact Lens Centre manufactures its own hard and gas-permeable contact lenses and specializes in state-of-the-art materials, lens design and type. The showroom also has the latest high-end fashionable frames and affordable ones too, added Susan. With such devotion to the field, the company has built its reputation as a pioneer in making contact lenses for those who need to wear contact lenses due to a complex optical concern. "Working with the public and family, as well as running your own business is really a nice feeling," said Susan.
