Trevor Cann, in his second season with the Ontario Hockey League's Peterborough Petes, was added to the selection camp roster Sunday after London Knights netminder Steve Mason showed concussion-like symptoms following a game Saturday against the Windsor Spitfires. Mason, drafted this past summer by the Columbus Blue Jackets, was run over by the Spitfires' Cory McGillis during the Knights' 8-4 win in Windsor. Mason laid on the ice for several minutes before being assisted off the ice by two teammates. There was question whether Mason would be able to fly out to Calgary the next morning with teammate Sam Gagner, but he did make the trip. Hockey Canada announced Sunday that Mason had not yet been cleared to skate but will remain in Calgary and be continuously monitored by Hockey Canada's medical staff. Cann and Mason are joined in camp by three other goaltenders (Jonathan Bernier, Carey Price and Leland Irving), 12 defencemen and 22 forwards. The final roster of 22 players is expected to be announced Friday. Two other players with local connections, John Tavares and Gagner, are also attempting to make the national junior squad. Farrow added goals for the 5-1 final. Murray Cruickshank earned a pair of helpers in the win, with Jesse Martin, Matt Fillman and Lain also collecting assists. Matt Noonan was rarely tested in goal for the Tigers, save for a two-minute stretch late in the second period, and recorded the victory. Blakelock, which improved to 5-0-2, has also won all three tournaments it has played in this season, including a competition last weekend in Montreal. Asked to list keys to the Tigers' success thus far, both Butler and Fiddler pointed to snipers Mitch Fillman (Matt's twin brother) and Lain. "Those two are both good enough players to have stayed in AAA (rep), but they had the heart to come out and represent their high school," Fiddler said. "They're really helping us out, putting up two to three points a night." The Tigers, who are on the ice five days a week as Butler tries to emulate a rep hockey program, aren't scheduled to play again until Dec. 19, when they host the Robert Bateman Wild at Oakville Arena. -- Jon Kuiperij can be reached at sports@oakvillebeaver.com.
