Oakville officially celebrates its sesquicentennial on May 27, 2007, but a Citizens Task Force is suggesting celebratory events take place throughout the year. The birthday year will be kicked off on Jan. 7, at the Mayor's New Year's Levee. To celebrate the town's official birthday on May 27, the task force is encouraging neighbourhoods to hold community parties in celebration of their area's history. The walk/run event is being planned for October, while a birthday fireworks display will take place on the Saturday night of the Waterfront Festival, scheduled to run from June 25-27. Town staff is also investigating the possibility of hosting a Doors Open Oakville event, to encourage residents and visitors to enjoy some of the town's heritage sites. A link on the town's website is planned to highlight all the birthday events ongoing throughout the year and special anniversary merchandise will be available to purchase. "This is a really exciting time for us," said Jane Courtemanche, the town's director of strategy, policy and communications. "We're really building up to the launch in January and we'll have events throughout the year." The proposed schedule of events was presented to the town's Community Services Committee on Tuesday night, with a final report to go to town council on Dec. 18. While a number of the celebratory proposals hinge on building a birthday component into existing events, such as the Waterfront Festival and Bronte's Harbourfront and Canada Day Festivals, representatives from several town BIAs told councillors that they will need cash assistance to make that happen. The Citizens Task Force is recommending the town allocate $50,000 to be used for staff support of the sesquicentennial initiatives, as well as an additional $50,000 to help support the planning and logistics of special events. Money could be allocated to help organizations offset town permit fees, help with event clean-up and pay for event insurance. However, that money won't be allocated until the town's 2007 budget is finalized, sometime next spring. Liz Behrens, who heads the Bronte BIA, told councillors that the business associations will need to know about the town's financial commitment prior to that time, in order to make up their own budgets. Birthday cakes, banners, advertising and use of the 150th anniversary logo will all cost money, noted Behrens, who suggested the town will need to chip in cash to ensure the BIAs can afford to participate. "If you believe the BIAs should be involved as partners in promoting the 150th, first of all, you're going to have to do a budget, and secondly, you're going to have to do some preapprovals," she said. Her comments were echoed by Richard Messer, executive director of the Kerr Street BIA. "The 150th anniversary celebration is key, I think, to the economic development of Oakville," he said. "I think we need to know how much money we have to throw this party." As a result of the comments, the task force was directed to consider the funding issue prior to the final report going to town council. embur $ COMPUTERS, SALES & SERVICE .ca FREE COGECO HIGH-SPEED INTERNET STARTER KIT (with the purchase of any computer system) In-Store and On-Site Service · From installations and upgrades to adware, spyware, virus and trojan removal we can do it all · Software & hardware troubleshooting, wired & wireless home & small business networking · Over 15 years experience maintaining and repairing personal computers in the Oakville area · Honest advice - if we can't fix your problem, we'll tell you and you don't pay · Reasonable rates, quick response time and rapid turn around times on repairs are what we're all about · Next time you feel like tossing your computer out the window, give us a call or drop it off embur ECONOBOX4 NEW SYSTEMS!
