Reg. $49.95 Christmas comes early for Oakville Fire Department Petro-Canada delivers fire truck to town Fire trucks are always popular Christmas gifts, but they usually come in the hand-held, driveunder-the-Christmas-tree size. Courtesy of Petro-Canada, the town will be receiving its own gift of a fire truck this year. But unlike the toy versions, this truck is full-size, and would cost nearly $1 million to buy brand-new. The two-year-old aerial pumper truck, which was previously part of Petro-Canada's inplant fire brigade equipment, is to be transferred to the town this month. When the Bronte-area plant was operating as a refinery, it maintained its own fire service to respond to small plant fires, and called on the Oakville Fire Department only for support services, says a report from the town's Fire Chief Richard Boyes. With the transition of the plant to a storage facility, the fire brigade has been downsized, and Oakville will become the primary responder to the site. The Petro-Canada truck has the ability to produce fire-suppressing foam, which Boyes noted would be necessary for effectively fighting fires at the plant. Without the transfer from PetroCanada, the town would have needed to purchase a similar vehicle. At the town's Community Services Committee meeting on Tuesday night, councillor Ralph Robinson publicly praised PetroCanada, noting that the company could have sold the truck when it disposed of the remainder of its refining equipment. "I think this is absolutely gracious of them," he said. "They are a real asset to the entire community." Sale $ 19.95 Boot Sale! Over 50 styles! Oakville Transit switching to Time Expired Transfers Starting Jan. 1, Oakville Transit will be offering Timed Expired Transfers -- a new transfer method that will allow passengers the flexibility of using one transfer within a limited time, rather than having to buy two or more one-way tickets. For example, if passengers need to stop off quickly at a store on their way home, or drop off their children at daycare on their way to work, the time expired transfer will allow them to hop off the bus and hop on the next bus -- all on one transfer -- with no need to pay again. "We wanted to give our passengers greater flexibility in their travel and encourage shorter trips that might otherwise not be taken," said Barry Cole, Director, Transit Services, Town of Oakville. The transfer is good for two hours from the route's starting time (not the time the transfer was issued upon boarding the bus) with the expiry time indicated on the transfer. Passengers simply have to ask for the transfer at the time of payment (by ticket or cash fare) when they board the bus. Drivers will not issue a transfer at any other point along the route. Simply show the transfer to the driver upon boarding each bus. Once the transfer expires, passengers will have to pay an additional fare. "The transfer method is extremely flexible for those passengers who want to run errands," added Cole. "They are valid for travel throughout the Town, in any direction, until the expiry time on the transfer."
