KAREN NEWMAN / OAKVILLE BEAVER If you're looking to get a grip on winter, you've come to the right place. New Oakville park named Glenorchy Conservation Area Conservation Halton's newest park will be named The Glenorchy Conservation Area. The name was picked from the entry by the Trafalgar Historical Society from Oakville in Conservation Halton's Name the Park Contest. The contest was launched on Oct. 20 when the Province of Ontario announced that it was partnering with Conservation Halton to protect 650 acres of land in north Oakville. The new conservation area, is bounded by Dundas Street West, Hwy. 407, Regional Road 25 and the Sixteen Mile Creek ravine. Glenorchy was a community that existed many years ago in north Oakville in the area that is today roughly bounded by Hwy. 407, Burnhamthorpe Road and Fourth Line. While there isn't any development at that site anymore, and local historians aren't certain on the origins of Glenorchy or it's eventual assimilation into modern day municipalities, the name Glenorchy seems to have Scottish origins. According to Conservation Halton spokesman Hassaan Basit, "the name means glen (valley) of tumbling waters, and considering that the new park has three creeks flowing through it, with the 16-Mile creek cutting a magnificent valley through the eastern end of the park, this name gracefully connects the site to local geography, ecology and history."
