www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Sunday December 24, 2006 - 7 LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Long live the tree On the morning of Dec. 20 the Region of Halton voted by majority to gift $25,000 to save the Great White Oak. The Province of Ontario also gifted $25,000, as did the Town Of Oakville. A great example of three levels of government responding positively to the overwhelming support from the public, who on their own initiative, raised approximately $268,000. A wonderful Christmas present for the children, artists, poets, singers, writers and tree huggers etc., who lobbied tirelessly, donated talent, time and money to preserve this magnificent arboreal specimen. Long live the Great White Oak! Long live Mrs. Joyce Burnell, who at 86 years of age, defied all the odds, naysayers, scrooges and grinches, to bring about this special Christmas miracle. MARIANNE HAWTHORNE Compassion for all life forms Re: Poor could use save the tree funds, Oakville Beaver, Dec. 15 The writer's use of the words `hypocrisy' and `selfishness' aimed against the supporters of the preservation of the tree are not helpful to the aims of the Salvation Army. I think he would find that the very people who support the tree are also those who contribute generously to the aims of the Salvation Army. Surely love for life in all its forms -- of nature and of mankind -- are compatible and not mutually exclusive.
