www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday December 29, 2006 - 11 good volunteer does not need to be over 30 years old. At the YMCA of Oakville, more than 400 volunteers made a difference in 2006, and many of those volunteers were between the ages of 16 and 24. Anthony Bossio is a great example of a young volunteer at the Y. A Sheridan college student, Anthony spends 20 hours per week at the Y as part of a co-op work project. He reports to Tammy Smith, Supervisor of Staff and Volunteer Development and has managed a variety of responsibilities. Read what Anthony has to say below about his volunteer experience at the Y in an essay which he wrote about his five weeks on the job. The YMCA of Oakville has been a great experience for me, so far. I have learned a lot within the organization in several areas of work. I feel that this experience has helped me grow as a person and will continue to help me in the long run. Some of the areas that I am involved in are youth programs more specifically the Game-on program and Sport Mix programs for youth aged 6 13. Also, I work with A Tammy Smith, my supervisor, on administrative work such as data entry and marketing and promotions for the YMCA of Oakville. Furthermore, I work in the Adventure Centre which is also known as the rock climbing gym, where I took a day lesson on how to belay and I am now belaying participants. The YMCA of Oakville is an amazing organization to be a part of. It operates effectively and efficiently in order to get things done. It is very organized with staff and volunteers and has great customer service representatives helping people when they need it. The YMCA of Oakville is very effective in what they do because they strive on teamwork and great communication with staff and volunteers and our customers appreciate it and notice it, which creates a positive and happy environment, which is what the Y is all about.
