www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday December 29, 2006 - 7 LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Time for pesticide ban Now that the issue of pesticide use is back on the Town Council's agenda, there are some thoughts I would like to share. First of all, any proposed laws would have to take into consideration the economic impact of agricultural uses, as there are many farming operations within Oakville Town limits. Secondly, there is the impact of lost revenue to local retailers. This should be minimized by the increased sale of natural fertilizers, weed whackers and other hand implements commonly used by the gardener to rid themselves of pests. And third, present users of lawn and garden pesticides need assistance and education as to how to manage their own lawns and gardens in an effective, natural or organic way. Ontario has a website one can visit for numerous tips on how to thwart weeds and bugs naturally. Please visit: http://www.healthylawns.net/ Chemicals used on lawns and gardens end up in our water, move over property lines through the air and end up on public sidewalks, roads and neighbouring lawns. There are many effective ways to maintain healthy lawns and gardens without the use of dangerous chemicals. BERNARD GERMAN Thumbs down on pesticide ban I urge members of Oakville Town Council to defeat the motion for a town-wide ban on pesticide use. This issue has been debated almost every year since we moved here in 1994, culminating in a 2003 referendum in which Oakville citizens voted 52 per cent against a pesticide ban. Councillors need to respect the will of this majority. Health Canada and the US FDA continue to test pesticides and continue to find them safe to use. Unless this changes and/or unless Town Council is prepared to have another referendum on pesticide use, leave this matter · POOL TABLES BILLIARD ACCESSORIES · DART BOARDS CABINETS · POKER TABLES CHIPS CARDS · AIR HOCKEY BUBBLE HOCKEY · FOOSBALL · SHUFFLEBOARD alone. There are plenty of things for council to work on for the improvement of our town. Recycling this divisive issue is not one of them. Requiring townspeople to express their well worn views (on both sides) at exhaustively long council meetings smacks of bullying by those councillors opposed to pesticide use. Ignoring the will of the people and forcing vote after vote on this matter until the "right answer" is achieved is at odds with the spirit of the democratic process. ROD BORSTMAYER Better uses for tree money With respect to the tree situation on Bronte Road, I would like to weigh in that there are a lot more productive things that $340,000 could be spent on in Oakville. For example, later library hours, a trades training centre for adults or a workplace issue mediation centre for low-income people. A new tree can be planted somewhere else for a lot less money that could have the same aesthetic value as the one that is in question on Bronte Road. J.
