44 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday January 26, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com Buzz products drafted into Major lacrosse Five members of last year's Oakville Buzz national Jr. B lacrosse championship-winning team were drafted into the Major Series League last weekend. Local resident Josh Smyth was selected by the Akwesasne Thunder, Sean Thomson went to the Mann Cup champion Peterborough Lakers, and Bobby Debrone, Kyle Hagel and Drew Petkoff were picked by the Brampton Excelsiors. Following is a brief synopsis of each player, including comments from former Buzz coach Glen Little: · Josh Smyth finished second in Buzz team scoring last season with 31 goals and 61 assists in 20 games. "One of my all-time favourites, Oakville homegrown from a great supportive family and has all the tools to be the next great one if he worked real hard at the game," said Little. "He has it all: size, shot, skill, and something you cannot teach - lacrosse smarts." · Sean Thomson joined the Buzz after a hiatus from competitive lacrosse and is reaping the benefits, scoring 17 goals and adding 22 assists last year in 15 games. "This was our joy of all. He was stuck in intermediate at party central and we convinced him to try and get his life back together, to play some serious ball as we felt he was wasting his talent," Little said. "Low and behold, he became the best faceoff man in Jr. B lacrosse, accumulated a lot of points, scored well enough on his SATs and got a scholarship to Bellarmine University." · Bobby Debrone was the Buzz captain last season, providing a tough defensive presence. "A true competitor, small in stature and big in heart and commitment, and a true leader," said Little. · Kyle Hagel played eight regular-season games for Oakville, scoring eight times and adding eight assists. "A joy to coach. He is the toughest young man I have ever coached," Little said. "He will take hit after hit and keep coming at you. What he may lack in finesse, he has in guts and true determination." · Drew Petkoff scored eight times and had 12 assists in 15 games last year, then scored seven goals during the Founder's Cup national championship tournament. "Whatever you need, he does. If you find him a niche, he will run through a wall for you," said Little. "So big and talented, and is developing an offensive game to boot."
