4- The Oakville Beaver, Friday February 16, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com Where is Mohmud Jiwani? By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF The disappearance of Oakville millionaire Mohmud (Moe) Jiwani continues to baffle those searching for him with no resolution in sight. The Oakville hotelier has not been seen since last April when he was spotted at a Toronto strip club. Jiwani's Mercedes was found in the parking lot with his credit cards, identification and cell phone inside. Private investigator Mark Mendelson, who was hired by Jiwani's family, says his investigation has gone nowhere. "It's at a standstill," he said. "No sightings, no developments despite the press and Mrs. Jiwani going on TV." So far a few false leads are all Mendelson has to show for his efforts and the Halton police say they have even less. "There's nothing to report now," said Detective Al Albano of Halton's major crimes unit. "We didn't really get a lot of tips." A glimmer of hope appeared in July with the arrest of Sandor Richard Gelesics and Abdul Bashir on charges of allegedly extorting an $80,000 ransom out of Jiwani's wife Laila for her husband's release. However, Albano says neither suspect has cooperated with police and whether or not they actually had anything to do with Jiwani's disappearance is uncertain. The ransom money was never recovered. As months passed rumors began to fly that "From all that we have seen there's no domestic issues, no business issues, nothing that would cause him to orchestrate this type of disappearance." Private investigator Mark Mendelson OCNA nominations Continued from page 1 Mohmud Jiwani Jiwani had staged his own disappearance however those investigating his case do not subscribe to this theory. "There's nothing to indicate that," said Albano. Mendelson too, does not believe a voluntary disappearance fits this scenario. "The whole theory that he's orchestrated this or made it look like he's vanished through illegal means is not him," he said. "From all that we have seen there's no domestic issues, no business issues, nothing that would cause him to orchestrate this type of disappearance." With 30 years of experience with the Toronto Police Service under his belt Mendelson says Jiwani's disappearance just doesn't make sense. "It's mind-numbing actually," he said. "It's very rare that people vanish off the face of the earth and even if they're the victim of a crime, a homicide, the vast majority of the time the body turns up. "It's very rare that we have people who are just gone. There are sightings, there are some indicators that they are still alive and sometimes there are indicators that they've been murdered." Oddly enough this is not the first time Jiwani has disappeared. Two years ago Jiwani went missing for four days before turning up in the Sandbar Hotel, a notorious Hamilton crack house. Despite all the twists and turns of the Jiwani story two things are certain. The first is that Jiwani's wife and his two children are approaching a full year without him. The second, as Mendelson explains, is that the chances of finding Jiwani alive have diminished. "As time goes on the prospects get more and more dim," he said. "That's very unfortunate."
