www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday February 16, 2007 - 7 Living it up Former Milton Councillor wants halton Tory nomination By Melanie Hennessey SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER LIESA KORTMANN / OAKVILLE BEAVER SHOUTING WITH GLEE: Alex Martinez-Rubatto (centre) was among the many students enjoying themselves during the 20-minute school-wide workout at St. Bernadette's school during the Annual Living It Up Challenge on Tuesday. St. Bernadette's joined schools in 34 other Living School communities in Ontario to participate in a full day of physical activities and healthy snacks. Liberal nominations called off Former Halton Federal Liberal Association president Jose Zlatar, who stepped down last month to seek nomination, has had his candidacy cancelled now that Halton MP Garth Turner is sitting as a Grit. Zlatar said the nomination process was recently called off by the party, making Turner the official candidate for the next election. "Initially I was a bit disappointed because we had been working at this (my campaign) for awhile," he said. "But, Garth can bring a lot of good things to the Liberal party." Zlatar said he received phone calls from Liberal leader Stephane Dion and Gerard Kennedy, Dion's special adviser on election readiness, regarding the nomination process cancellation. "They explained the strategic importance of Turner joining the party," he said. "It was comforting to know the leadership took the time to call me." He noted that he's still a member of the association's executive, which has wholeheartedly thrown its support behind Turner. The race is on for the local Conservative nomination as former Milton councillor Rick Malboeuf is once again seeking the spot. The long-time Halton resident, who placed second to current Halton MP Garth Turner in the 2005 nomination contest, announced his intentions to seek federal candidacy last week. He's going up against Miltonian D'Arcy Keene, who also sought the nomination in 2005. "I feel my experience and my background in the community make me a viable candidate to challenge Garth Turner," he said. While an election hasn't been called yet, Malboeuf already has a long list of issues set out that he'd like to deal with if ultimately elected, such as health care. "We still have to strive to reduce waiting times for all Canadians," he said, adding this will take co-operation from all of the provinces. Malboeuf also highlighted the need for increased funding to assist municipalities in repairing neglected and deteriorating infrastructure. He said his past experience as a local councillor made him aware of the pressure infrastructure `downloading' puts on municipalities. "Infrastructure can't keep up with growth," he said. "The fiscal imbalance has Rick Malboeuf to be addressed." The 56-year-old pointed out that the environment has become a key issue for all parties, noting he supports the direction the Conservatives are taking with the Clean Air Act. In addition, Malboeuf spoke in favour of the Conservatives' approach to crime and justice -- "You do the crime, you do the time." And during the next federal election, he said he thinks accountability and integrity will be a big issue in the Halton riding. Malboeuf is originally from Quebec, but has lived in Halton for over 25 years. He's a married father of four and also has two grandchildren. FEBRUARY SAVINGS!
