Oakvillegreen hosts forum on Halton's proposed EFW incinerator Oakvillegreen Conservation Association Inc. and Protect Our Water and Environmental Resources (P.O.W.E.R.) is hosting a public forum on Halton Region's proposed energy from waste (EFW) incinerator on March 27. The event is at 7 p.m. at the Galaxy 707, 475 North Service Rd. E. Guest speaker is Dr. Paul Connett, recently retired Professor Emeritus of Chemistry from St. Lawrence University in Canton, NY, who specializes in Environmental Chemistry and Toxicology. Over the past 22 years Connett's research on waste management has taken him to 49 U.S. states and 48 countries, where he has given over 2,000 pro bono public presentations. He has coauthored six peer-reviewed articles on dioxin and numerous other articles on waste management. Connett will be joined by Rod Muir, a waste diversion campaigner from the Sierra Club of Canada, and John Jackson director of the Recycling Council of Ontario. Halton Region is currently preparing a business case for the EFW incinerator. It is scheduled to be finished sometime this month. The proposed EFW incinerator is to be built at the Region's landfill on Bronte Road. Connett and Muir's presentation will be followed by a panel discussion that will include Brian Burton, a cost analyst, who ran unsuccessfully for Halton Regional Chair in the last municipal election. The panel will answer questions from the audience and discuss waste disposal options. This event is supported by the Halton Environment Network. Whether due to travel, long work hours, commuting or the breakdown of a marriage, it is harder than ever before for dads to stay connected to their children. Being connected is essential to the development of a healthy relationship between parent and child. We need strong, positive relationships with our kids to ensure that our parenting influence is effective as they grow and develop. Here are some creative ways to stay in touch, when life seems determined to keep you apart: · A quick phone call through the day can let kids know you are thinking of them. · Leave a note on your child's pillow if you leave the house before they wake in the morning · Write a message with washable marker on the bathroom mirror · Kids love to receive mail. When out of town, send "thinking of you" cards to your kids. You can fill them out, address and stamp them while you are still home, then just pop them in the mail while you are away. · Have your kids use calendars, digital cameras, and scrapbooks to document things they do while you are away. When you come home, spend some time together looking at their creations. · Use technology to your advantage. Webcams, digital cameras and email are great tools to keep in touch. Staying connected helps children realize that even though you are not there, you are thinking of them, you are interested in them and you love them. If you have any other creative ways to stay connected, please share them with us. Once our website is reconstructed, we will post your ideas on our "Dad's Page". Send your ideas to ntaylor@op-cc.ca.
