Like humans dogs require change in order to keep healthy. To ensure that your dog is getting the mental and physical stimulation it requires, consider the breed, energy level and opportunities that you can provide to support a positive lifestyle. Most dog breeds were developed to perform specific purposes hunting, guarding, herding and in most cases the dog required a level of stamina and ability to focus on the job in order to complete tasks successfully. Today most people choose dogs for companionship, a far less demanding livelihood. Without a job or proper exercise dogs become bored. With boredom can come problem behaviours. Focus their energy instead on exercise and mental challenges and your pet will be a much happier companion. Playing with your pet not only increases your bond, but can also provide an opportunity for exercise. Herding and retrieving breeds enjoy herding or returning a ball that's been thrown. Most breeds enjoy a good game of hide and seek. Hide you pet's favourite toy in an easy to find place and work up to making the game more difficult. Many dogs really enjoy finding their stuff, particularly if it includes finding a treat also. Hand feed treats when the dog is successful retrieving an item. Alternatively, let the dog enjoy trying to get treats out of some of the popular toys that can be hidden. Most dogs will benefit from a minimum of two outings a day. If possible, an hour of exercise in the morning is helpful if the dog is going to be left on its own for the day. Strenuous exercise is best playing with other dogs, playing fetch games, going jogging - but remember not to overdo it. Like humans dogs must work up to increased levels of activity to avoid compromising their health. If your pet has a predetermined health condition make sure you check with your veterinarian for a suggested exercise program. Likewise if your dog has lots of energy and interest in learning, go beyond basic obedience training and include some added tricks or fun activities. Agility, flyball, tracking, search and rescue, pet visitations, herding, Frisbee, freestyle dancing, carting, sledding, herding, swimming and dock diving, are just some of the fun ways you can keep your dog's body and mind active.
