St. Ignatius of Loyola is celebrating its 25th anniversary but seems young when compared to Oakville Trafalgar High School, which will mark its 100th anniversary next year. But Loyola has been mighty. Just as OTHS was Oakville's first high school, Loyola secured its place in local history as the town's first Catholic high school. In fact, Loyola was the first Catholic high school in Ontario to be fully constructed with Ministry of Education capital grants in the wake of the extension of full public funding to Catholic school boards in Ontario. Politics aside, organizers want Loyola's 25th anniversary to be a chance for both celebrating and reuniting. That's the theme -- Celebrate & Reunite -- of the anniversary celebrations to take place May 3-5. Loyola athletics teacher Brian Arsenault is one of two original staff members (along with French teacher Anne Helbko) still at the school. Arsenault is working with Loyola vice principal Pat Daly -- who started at Loyola as a history teacher -- to ensure the upcoming anniversary is a cause for staff and students, past and present, to celebrate and reunite. And when the party is over and the old friendships rekindled, a legacy will be left behind. All proceeds from the 25th anniversary celebrations will go to the creation of an alumni scholarship fund to be awarded annually to a male those attending must be 19 or older. It will be held at Loyola from 7 p.m.midnight. Cost is $15. On Saturday, May 5 there will be an Alumni Soccer Game at 10 a.m. at Loyola for all former male and female Loyola Hawks soccer players. Registration is online. Also on Saturday, May 5 there will be an Alumni Golf Tournament at Deerfield Golf Club in Oakville. It will be a Texas-scramble format and lunch and prizes will be provided. First tee-off time is 11:30 a.m. Cost is $100 and registration is online. Also on Saturday, May 5 on the Loyola field, there will be a Family Carnival to be hosted by the school's student council. There will be games and challenges for everyone. It's at 1 p.m., it's free, but registration is again, online. An Anniversary Mass will be held at 5 p.m. at St. Matthew's Church followed by a 25th Anniversary Dinner and Dance at Holy Trinity Croatian Catholic Church Hall from 7 p.m.midnight. Cost is $50 per person and tickets must be purchased in advance. Loyola has over the years, according to Arsenault, grown with its surrounding Glen Abbey community. However it was in southwest Oakville at the former Georges Vanier senior elementary school building located at 2405 Rebecca St. that it got its start. Loyola's first Grade 9 student body was assembled with the Grade 8 students housed in the former Vanier RIZIERO VERTOLLI / OAKVILLE BEAVER CAUSE TO CELEBRATE: Loyola Catholic Secondary School head of physical education Brian Arsenault stands in the hall leading to the school gym, one of numerous venues at the Nottinghill high school recently adorned with new murals as the school prepares for its 25th anniversary celebration May 3-5. and female graduating student. "The criteria is still being worked on," said Arsenault. Details of the anniversary celebration -- how to take part and how to offer support -- are on the Loyola anniversary website at www.loyola25.myevent.com. A Career Day is to be held at the high school on Monday, April 30. Reunion celebrations will be kicked off on Thursday, May 3 with a Music Night, the school's annual celebration -- and this year alumni musicians interested in playing a tune or two are invited to RSVP online. A Staff Reunion will also be held on Thursday May 3 at 7:30 p.m. in the school library. It's open to all current and former teachers, educational assistants, administrators, secretarial and support staff. On Friday, May 4 there will be a Meet and Greet Social and Silent Auction promising a night of nostalgia featuring photos and memorabilia. This event will have a cash bar and light snacks.
