32 - The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday March 31, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com Artist takes a look at a mad, mad, mad, mad world It's a mad, mad, mad, mad world starting April 5 in Gairloch Gardens. Monika Napier's show investigates the overlooked parts of everyday living. Mad, mad, mad, mad world exaggerates the physical properties of extension cords, transforming them into various objects. The orange cords have been coiled into slouching, A MODERN ARBORICULTURE AND TREE MAINTENANCE leaden nests, the blue cords have the feel of an invasive vine, and the huge braided yellow cord leads us into both fable and critique of energy usage. Napier's work recharges speculation, and invites us to reconsider the spatial qualities of technology and our firmly held values of consumption and material entitlement. To deepen the exploration of these values, Napier invites Oakville residents to lend her an indoor or outdoor extension cord, which they use, preferably, on a daily basis. Napier will use these borrowed cords in the construction of one of her sculptures titled Braid. Those who want to lend an extension cord to Napier's project will find a drop off box at the entrance of Oakville Galleries at Centennial Square during the building's open COMPANY "We treat the cause, not the symptom." She enjoys dancing, playing piano, and reading, and describes herself as nature-loving and humorous. Are you the host family she needs to make her year a success? For more information as to how your family could get involved in this exciting volunteer opportunity by hosting Stefanie or another student like her, contact our local coordinator: hours.
