Cann, a local resident who plays goal for the Peterborough Petes of the OHL, stopped 20 shots in Canada's 9-1 win over Latvia on Saturday. The win improved Canada to 3-0 in the round-robin portion of the tournament. Canada was to face Russia yesterday (Tuesday) with the winner earning a bye to the semifinals. SPORTSBRIEFS showing, considering problems he and Stittle had getting their boat and equipment to Palma Mallorca, Spain, in time for the championships. "We managed to make the best out of a bad situation," said Johansson, who placed 15th in the 2004 Olympic Summer Games and hopes to compete in next year's Beijing Olympics. "It was amazing that we were able to bounce back from the logistical nightmares to perform as well as we did." The team is back in action this week in a regatta in Hyeres, France. Jones third-best Canuck at triathlon Kyle Jones of Oakville finished 17th at the season-opening World Cup triathlon in Ishigaki, Japan. Jones was the third-best finisher among the Canadian contingent. Former Olympic champion Simon Whitfield was eighth and Brent McMahon of Victoria was ninth. Basketball Vipers in Provincial Cup The Oakville Vipers #1 major bantam boys' basketball team will seek a provincial title this weekend as it competes in the Ontario Provincial Cup tournament in London. The Vipers recently won their own basketball tournament at Holy Trinity Catholic Secondary School, downing the Waterloo Wildcats 47-37 in the championship game. Johansson, Stittle eighth in Europe Oakville Yacht Squadron product Oskar Johansson and partner Kevin Stittle finished eighth at the European tornado sailing championships earlier this month. The team posted finishes of 26th, 3rd, 5th, 2nd, 21st, 13th, 2nd, 8th and 30th during the nine-race series, then placed 10th in the medal race. Johansson was pleased with the team's LIESA KORTMANN / OAKVILLE BEAVER DO THE TWIST: Matt Albrecht, pictured competing in floor exercise, was first overall after three events in last weekend's provincial men's artistic gymnastics championships before falling during his vault routine. The defending national champion finished fifth. Nationals next month in Regina Continued from page 30 "I was hitting my routines and hitting them clean," said Lord, who added silver medals on floor and high bar. "I saw there was a chance but I was trying not to think about it. As soon as I start to think about it, I start to get too nervous." Lord and Grinter will now move on to nationals in Regina, to be held May 19. Lord, who finished 10th last year, said he isn't getting too hung up on results. "I'll go in with the same attitude as I had for provincials, where whatever happens, happens," he said. "I'll do my best and keep a positive attitude." Grinter will step up his training leading up to nationals, looking to build off his strong showing on the weekend. "Matt Grinter came a long way," Lord said. "That's a big step up, going to senior." Grinter said the biggest difference in senior is that in addition to executing the elements, form takes on even more importance because of the high skill level of the competitors. For Albrecht, the coming months were supposed to be busy with nationals as well as an invitation to try out of the Canadian Pan Am Games team. Still, with hopes of earning a scholarship in the future, he knows it's best to get the injury looked after rather than doing further damage. "(Pan Ams) was one of my goals for the past two years," he said. "It's hard to pull out but I have take care of myself, but it's still a bit of a kick in the pants."
