www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday April 20, 2007 - 27 Foundation helps Oakville grow one tree at a time K eeping Oakville green is a passionate cause of The Community Foundation of Oakville (CFO). Together with a dedicated group of Oakville high school students, and through the help of the Community Foundation's Oakville Environmental Fund, this passion has resulted in the planting of hundreds of new trees and shrubs in our community. Since 2003, Petro-Canada has been the sponsor behind an annual treeplanting initiative organized by the Community Foundation of Oakville and the Town of Oakville. Each year, a large group of enthusiastic Abbey Park high school students, led by the school's Environmental Council, has been donning gloves and shovels to bring this project to fruition. Through Petro-Canada's National Community Investment Program, $10,000 has been granted in each of the last four years to The Community Foundation of Oakville's Heritage Trails fund. Since then, hundreds of trees and shrubs have been purchased and planted along a stretch of the trails in the Bronte Creek valley. Petro-Canada spokesperson Jon Hamilton explains, "This is a great initiative because the work is completed by Oakville students, who really understand the need to protect the local environment." Last fall, under the guidance of the Town of Oakville's Parks and Open Space staff, approximately 60 students from Abbey Park High School planted close to 300 trees and shrubs in Riverview Park in Bronte. "We have worked with this partnership for four years. The tree planting is a major part of what we do to contribute to the community. Our Environmental Council appreciates the opportunity to work and learn. We hope that we have other opportunities to con- tribute to Oakville and improve the world, one tree at a time," said Regan Heffernan, Principal of Abbey Park High School. More recently, the CFO granted $2,000 towards a partnership between Conservation Halton and Iroquois Ridge High School's Environmental Club for a pilot project to break ground this spring. Conservation Halton will teach students to design a site plan and ultimately implement a School Greening Project that will involve planting native trees and shrubs to enhance the quality of their schoolyard. The Oakville Environmental Fund is an endowment fund set up to preserve and enhance the quality of our natural spaces.
