www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday May 4, 2007 - 43 Eagles present coach with glass eagle award Since the Minor Oaks Hockey Association house league system does not have an official Coach of the Year award, the minor peewee red Eagles took matters into their own hands. Members of the hockey team presented their coach, Gary O'Neill, with a glass eagle at the team's end-of-season banquet last weekend at Park Plaza, showing their appreciation for the way O'Neill guided them this past year. The Eagles won both the league (regular-season) and playoff championship in house league competition. " The boys... want to take this opportunity to thank their awesome coach for having faith in them and for the countless hours he spent with them on the ice and talking with them off the ice," said Eagles goalie Matthew Caccamo. O'Neill was assisted this past season by Brad Dennis and Tim McCurry. Trampoline and tumbling championships results Stefan Low of the Oakville Gymnastics Club edged two of his rivals by one-tenth of a point to claim first place at the Trampoline and Tumbling Provincial Championships, held at the Glen Abbey Recreation Centre on the weekend. Low finished with a score of 54.50 to narrowly win the provincial 1 men's tumbling title. Low led after scoring a 27.10 on his first pass and teammate Cory Marsh was right behind with a 27.00. Nathaniel St. Romain of Quinte Bay scored a 26.70 on his first pass but he turned in the best score on the second pass, a 27.70. Low would hold on to top spot, though, with a 27.40 on his second pass. Marsh would match Low's score to earn a share of second place with St. Romain at 54.40. Oakville's Ryan Stephenson finished second in the senior men's tumbling behind Burlington's Denis Vachon while Stephenson's teammate Ryan Webb was fourth. Luke Mackinnon was fifth in the novice men's 10-14 tumbling and Ricardo Smith was third in the novice men's 15-and-over tumbling. THANKS, COACH: Presenting coach Gary O'Neill with a glass eagle award were (left to right) Matthew Caccamo,Tyler Downman, Blake Donaldson and Vaughan Hachey. MacDonald representing CIS Continued from page 41 MacDonald, who also attended Oakville Trafalgar High School before relocating to Edmonton, has CFL opportunities as well, having been picked 21st overall in Wednesday's draft by the Calgary Stampeders. That eases a bit of the pressure heading into the rookie camp, but MacDonald admitted he does feel he will have a lot to prove in Louisiana next week. "The amount of people that have come out of (Canadian Interuniversity Sport to the NFL) is insignificant, compared to the number of players in the CIS," he said. "I feel I'm representing the CIS, trying to prove to the NFL that there are kids who can come out of up north here in Canada and compete. Everyone puts such a high opinion on the NFL and pooh-poohs the CFL, but I think they're a lot closer than you think." MacDonald said he followed last year's NFL attempt by former CIS star and Burlington native Jesse Lumsden with pride. Lumsden received plenty of media coverage during his efforts to make the rosters of the Seahawks and Washington Redskins, and MacDonald has already had a taste of that. The University of Alberta, which has had only one other student -- Brian Fryer -- ever sign with an NFL squad, held a news conference Tuesday on campus. MacDonald was the subject of stories in Edmonton dailies, on radio and on CBC and CTV news broadcasts, and was even congratulated Wednesday in the House of Commons by an Edmonton MP. "I've never dealt with this before," MacDonald said. "I'm a pretty modest guy, and I'm not getting all high and mighty about this, mainly because I know how much more I have to do. "I've got nothing to lose in a sense. I'm going out there as a Canadian guy they're taking a chance on, and all I can do is my best," he continued. "If it doesn't happen, it's a great experience. If it does, even better." Carol Jones Sales Representative View slide show at QUANTUM REALTY INC.
