10 - The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday May 5, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com TAX FREE 1 WEEK ONLY! All about the arts T he nominations are in and what a turn out. Oakville has shown its community spirit by forwarding the names of some of Oakville's finest volunteers. Each year, the Town of Oakville recognizes community heroes at the Oakville Community Spirit Awards. Over the coming weeks that lead up to the June 13 recognition evening, we'll profile the 2007 nominees in all seven categories. Arts Award Sponsored by The Oakville Beaver The arts award recognizes an individual or organization that contributes volunteer time to develop, enhance and protect the arts in Oakville. The three nominees this year are: · World of Threads Festival nominated by Helen Barnes: This is a biannual festival dedicated to providing an educational forum that celebrates traditional and contemporary textile arts: quilting, hooking, spinning and weaving, tatting and lace-making, knitting and crocheting, embroidery, and other fibre arts techniques. · Danny Gasin, Halton Arts Review nominated by Charlotte Meissner, Oakville Chamber Orchestra: Gasin is a volunteer reviewer, critic and lover of the arts. Danny has been a passionate booster of the Oakville community and an advocate of its cultural life. · Carole Crotty nominated by Kevin September, Oakville Music and Art Shared Space: Crotty has been a driving force to build awareness in the community and help profile the work of the Oakville Suzuki Association, Canadian Music Competitions, the Festival of Classics and Music and Art Shared Space (MASS). The selection committee has a bitter sweet task ahead of them in choosing just one recipient out of these three very deserving art enthusiasts. Each year, the Town's steering committee commissions a local artist to design a one-of-a-kind art piece for the event. This year, Andrew Kuntz of Glass Arts will create a glass award symbolizing the spirit of the awards. Kuntz is a graduate of Sheridan School of Crafts and Design and his work can be seen in several locations including the Y.M.C.A. of St. Catharines with their Donor Recognition Window; Movenpic Restaurants in Toronto and in the Palace of Prince Faisal bin Al Saud, Riyadh in Saudi Arabia. You can see this glass work at the recognition evening on June 13. Tickets for the dinner and awards night are $30 each or a table of eight for $240. To purchase your tickets, contact Louise Veres at the Town of Oakville, 905.845.6601 ext. 3154 or via email at lveres@oakville.ca. -- Submitted by the Town of Oakville.
