Although we may think osteoporosis is an older woman's condition, taking care of your bones begins at an early age and continues throughout your lifetime. Here are five simple ways to get serious about your bone health: 1. You are what you eat A healthy, balanced diet is a fundamental part of our overall heath, including healthy bones. Canada's Food Guide is a great guideline to follow to make sure we're getting enough nutrients for optimal health. 2. The key is calcium Calcium is one of the most important bone-building nutrients. In fact, 99 per cent of your body's calcium is stored in your bones. Milk, cheese and yogurt are super foods when it comes to dietary calcium. Depending on their age, Canadians need 2-4 daily servings according to Health Canada. Make sure you get enough calcium everyday, and you are one step closer to healthy bones. 3. D is for defense When it comes to the bone health game, vitamin D is a major player. Vitamin D helps the body to absorb and use calcium. It is made in the body when our skin is exposed to sunlight, or we can find it in some foods. The best food sources of vitamin D include cow's milk and oily fish such as salmon and sardines. 4. Work it out Physical activity is a major part of any healthy lifestyle and helps keep bones strong. In addition to sports, every day activities like housework, walking, gardening or dancing count as exercise. Average Canadians should aim to do at least 30 minutes of physical activity each day.
