30 - The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday May 23, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com Chuck Mangione will kick off Downtown Oakville Jazz Festival Grammy Award winner Chuck Mangione will open the 15th annual Downtown Oakville Jazz Festival. Mangione will kick things off on Aug. 8 at the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts. "Tickets for Mangione won't last, so be sure to grab this opportunity now to see another fantastic jazz legend at the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts," said Downtown Oakville Jazz Festival chair, Peter Tulloch. Over more than five decades, beginning in the early 1960s, Mangione has released more than 30 albums. He reached new heights with his mega-hit single and album, Feels So Good. Recently Smooth Jazz stations throughout the United States recognized Mangione's Feels So Good as their alltime #1 song. He has made appearances on The Tonight Show, Larry King, Soul Train, Solid Gold and many others. "For me, lifting the people up, making them enjoy what we're doing is as important as it is for me to play the kind of music I want to play," said Mangione. His hit, Chase the Clouds Away, was used as background music during the telecast of the 1976 Olympic Games, and Bellavia (`Beautiful Way'), won Mangione his first Grammy Award. The Children of Sanchez double-album soundtrack won the Hollywood Foreign Press Association's Golden Globe Award. In 1980, Mangione performed in front of a television audience of several hundred million when he performed live at the closing ceremonies for the Winter Olympics in Lake Placid. Tickets to see Mangione at the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts on Aug. 8 cost $72. On the second day of the Jazz Festival, Aug. 9, the Yellowjackets will hit the stage. Featuring a small crew of talented musicians, led by guitar virtuoso Robben Ford, they push the boundaries of jazz with a distinctive sound that incorporates elements of bebop, funk, R&B and rock. The group also includes original members Russell Ferrante (keyboards), Jimmy Haslip (bass), and recent members Bob Mintzer (saxophones) and Marcus Baylor (drums). Tickets cost $45. To purchase tickets, call The Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts Box Office at 905-815-2021 or visit www.oakvillecentre.ca. The Downtown Oakville Jazz Festival will feature these two ticketed events, followed by three days of outdoor free stages with more than 25 jazz performances. Downtown Oakville, in its 150th year, is a cultural destination known for over 450 unique shops, restaurants, entertainment and services. The Downtown Oakville Jazz Festival is preserved by the Downtown Oakville Business Improvement Area and is sponsored by Northwest Mutual Funds, Bell, Canadian Sound, AM 740, The Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts, Lockwood Chrysler, Greenlight Graphics, Holiday Inn-Oakville, FM Systems, The Country Inn, Paradiso Restaurant and Budds' Saturn Saab.
