DEREK WOOLLAM / SPECIAL TO THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Brian Churchill-Smith (left) and Mike Young led Oakville Trafalgar High School to the team title in Halton high school golf competition this season.Young shot a four-under-par 69 yesterday at Glen Abbey Golf Club to secure top spot in the individual standings, while Churchill-Smith, who entered the final round tied with Young for first place, finished second. Three more wins for junior B Buzz The Oakville Buzz has extended its Ontario Lacrosse Association junior B season-opening unbeaten streak to eight games after winning three more recent contests. Oakville whipped the Markham Ironheads 142 Thursday and downed the Halton Hills Bulldogs 12-10 Friday, then earned a 9-6 win Sunday in Mississauga over the Tomahawks. The Buzz (8-0-1) holds a three-point lead over the Mimico Mountaineers for top spot in the South East Division. Mimico, also yet to lose with a 7-0 mark, has two games in hand on Oakville. Josh Ruys led the Buzz Thursday with a fivegoal, two-assist effort. Braden Gallant (three), Josh Barrick (two), Cedric Soubry (two), Mark Kingston and Connor Gamble also tallied. Friday, Gallant had three goals and four assists. Barrick (two), Reggie Traccitto, Scott Drysdale, Ryan Abu-Ali, Spencer Taugher, Dylan Gilbert, Soubry and Ruys added markers. Against Mississauga, Traccitto paced the Buzz with three goals and three helpers. Barrick and Gallant had two goals each, with singles going to Ruys and Taugher. The Buzz is home to Mississauga Friday at Glen Abbey Recreation Centre, an 8 p.m. start. Provincial bronze Van Koeverden perfect in World Cup Adam van Koeverden is four-for-four so far in World Cup kayak races this season. Van Koeverden won both the men's kayak singles 500-metre and 1,000m races at a World Cup canoe and kayak comptition last weekend in Szeged, Hungary. The wins followed a double-gold showing at the first World Cup meet of the season, held earlier this month in Croatia. Van Koeverden, in fact, has won both the 500m and 1,000m events at four consecutive World Cup meets, dating back to last year. Mark Oldershaw, van Koeverden's Burloak Canoe Club teammate, earned silver in the canoe singles 500m race, finishing second to three-time Olympic champion and eight-time world champion Andreas Dittmer of Germany. SPORTSBRIEFS England. The gold medal came a week after Dawson's National Lacrosse League squad, the Arizona Sting, fell to the Rochester Knighthawks in the Champions Cup. Shepley, Whalers on Mem Cup ropes After opening the Memorial Cup tournament with a pair of losses, Zack Shepley and the Plymouth Whalers needed a win last night -- and possibly some help as well. The Whalers, who posted a 4-1 series win over the London Knights in the OHL championship series, began the Memorial Cup with a 4-3 overtime loss to the Vancouver Giants, then were downed 4-1 by the Medicine Hat Tigers. Plymouth faced the Lewiston MAINEiacs last night in its final roundrobin game. A Whalers victory would have given both Plymouth and Lewiston a 1-2 mark, while a Vancouver win last night over Medicine Hat would leave the Tigers at 1-2 as well. Tiebreakers would determine which of the three 1-2 teams would advance to playoff action. THIRD PLACE: The Oakville Vytis midget girls defeated the Cambridge Centaurs 35-27 to win the bronze medal at the Ontario Basketball Association championships in Sault Ste. Marie. The victory avenged an earlier 34-21 loss to Cambridge in the tournament. Oakville defeated the East Toronto Heat 25-23 and the Huron Lakers 47-28 but St. Catharines topped the Vytis 44-35 in the semifinals to advance to the gold-medal game. Team members are: Christine Spice, Emily McRae, Katie Goodman, Allison MacIntyre, Amber Basso, Mariko Hirano, assistant coach Gord Hirano, Kayla Michaelsen, Janelle Eberly, Claire Sprawson, coach Jeff McRae, Marion Goreski, Danielle Casullo and Alanna Bodo. Dawson helps Canada to lax title The box lacrosse season did not finish without a championship win for Dan Dawson. The 25-year-old local resident helped Canada to gold at the ILF World Indoor Lacrosse Championships last weekend in Halifax as Canada edged Iroquois 15-14 in overtime in the title match. Dawson scored once in the gold-medal game and had five markers in Canada's 24-8 semifinal win over
