The Escape is the first North American vehicle to use seating fabric made from 100 per cent recycled materials. Ford claims using recycled fabrics saves 600,000 gallons of water it would otherwise take to use new materials. Ford also says this means 1.8 million pounds Now including valet pick-up** 2007 CLEAR THE LOT EVENT! THE 2008 MODELS ARE COMING. Ford made a big deal about changing the interior lighting hue from the traditional green to what they call Ice Blue that's supposed to easier on the eyes at night. The coolest thing is the centre console that has two removable bins for three different stowage volumes. With both bins removed, you can store a laptop. Also the smallest bin fits into a holder on the passenger side of the transmission tunnel - perfect for cellphone and the like. There are two engines offered and one four-speed automatic transmission. The five-speed manual of the first generation Escape has been discontinued. The base engine is a 2.3-litre, DOHC inline four-cylinder producing 153 hp and 152 lb/ft of torque. The second is a 3.0litre, DOHC V6 producing 200 hp and 193 lb/ft of torque. Depending on engine and model, front-wheeldrive (FWD) and all-wheel-drive (AWD) is available. The V6 equipped Escape can tow up to 3,500 lb while the four-cylinder can tow 1,500 lb. There a six ways to mix and match the 2008 Escape. The first is the base four-cylinder FWD only XLS at $23,999. The mid-trim level XLT model is $25,399 for the FWD 2.3-litre and $26,499 for the FWD 3.0-litre; $27,799 for the AWD 2.3-litre and $28,899 for the AWD 3.0-litre. The top trim Limited is only available in AWD and V6 form for $34,499. There is also the Hybrid Escape that was fully road tested elsewhere on these pages. The Escape Hybrids are priced at $31,499 for the FWD and $33,899 for the AWD. Fuel consumption listed at 10.3/7.7L/100 km city/highway and 10.9/8.3L/100 km city/highway for the FWD/AWD 2.3-litre models and 11.7/8.2L/100 km city/highway and 12.5/9.1l/100 km city/highway for the FWD/AWD V6 versions. As noted above, the ride-and-drive portion was pretty relaxed. Refreshingly, Ford handed me the keys, gave me a route book and told me to be back before the start of rush hour. Having never explored that part of Quebec before, I stuck with the route book for about 20 minutes before turning off at the Town of Wakefield. With lakeside lookout and a charming (but closed) covered bridge, the only thing to do was keep going. As opposed to the demolition derby driving style of the good citizens of Gatineau/Hull, out on rural highways, people lopped along at the limit, probably because of the incredible number of potholes. I did see one radar car and a pretty bored looking officer trolling, no doubt, for city slickers from Hull and Ottawa. Driving a Limited with supple leather seats and great tunes on the radio, it didn't take long to get into the flow of traffic which kind of fits in with the land and the people. The V6 barely ticked over most of the time except on the highway coming back where the Escape came swiftly up to speed for passing the great of number of Hydro Quebec trucks that seem to prowl the four-lane. Stopping for a bottle of water along the way, the operator of a convenience store said she noticed the Escape the minute I pulled into the parking lot. That said to me the Escape has the kind of standout power that seems be a trend among crossover SUVs. And the end of the day, I had to say that the Escape had risen to the challenge of the likes of the Hyundai Santa Fe and Toyota RAV-4 just to name two very serious competitors. It's now up to Ford to keep the ball rolling and to make sure their top of the compact SUV standing isn't allowed to Escape. BRONTE RD. PACIFIC RD.
